Generally a grossly mis-adjusted clutch indicates wear to the clutch components. As the disc wears ,this increases tension on the clutch cable and when slippage this severe is present, its a sign that the disc, cover and throw-out bearing is neccessary

possible that clutch has failed, to test do following
switch off engine and put gear into 4th, with brakes on try to start
engine while in gear. if the engine starts switch it off straight away

this confirms your clutch has failed, if engine stalls your clutch is good.but could mean that the clutch activator is not working. either way
recomment you see a qualified dealer or machanic about this issue.

I hope this was helpful

if it was the neutral safety switch it more than likely wouldn`t start at all or start when without pushing on the clutch.it sounds more like the linkage could be damaged(think these are cable) or its out of adjustment and needs adjusting.does it feel like its going into gear(like it does when working) but not engaging if so it could be a problem with the transmission.first have the linkage checked out.

Stickey clutch

it's either a friction somewhere inside the clutch basket(but I really can't imagine that, beacause all of the parts are moving in there), or somewhere in the parts behind it(between the clutch and the wheels) or it could be a friction between the clutch basket and the gearbox body(which is the most probable), but in that case you would hear a terrible noise.
First inspect the underbody visually and look for anything out of order. then look under the hood if you find anything suspicious. It's important to make sure it's not stg else -it would be a pity to work for hours to discover the clutch is all right. If you are sure, have a look at the clutch and make sure you replace even the smaller parts(bearing, any springs).

rate if helped

The throw out bearing could cause these isues, however I would look else where before doing anything about that. A throw out bearing can be "bad" for a very long time without causing any issues other than annoyance. Is this a cable operated slave cylinder or a hydraulic? If Cable you can adjust the throw of the pedal to take up any slack that will be made from there. Your problem sounds like your not getting enough clutch pedal throw, is there allot of play in the pedal? A simple test you can do is with the car off pointing down hill (key on so steering wheel is unlocked) With the car in gear, depress the clutch pedal slowly untill the car begins to roll. If allot of travel is required then you know that your not getting full use of your clutch pedal. A Broken shift or stretched shift cable could cause this issue as well. I would start simple and work your way up. If a hyd. system it is self adjusting i would check for full fluid in the resevoir as well. Let me know how you make out and we can trouble shoot from there.
