Question about 2001 Dodge Intrepid

Won't turn over

Two days ago...Wife called said car wouldn't start...sound was hard to descibe...like a whirring sound...not turning over...told her to move the shifter to neutral and it started. She mentioned that it turned over slow a couple times before starting.Yesterday happened to her again but was able to restart in Park (said she couldn't engage the shifter button to move it to Neutral). Same slow to fast turnover before starting. Got it home and I can't get it to turn over. All I get is a loud click when I turn the key.
I'm able to move the shifter no problem, but won't turn over in N or P.
Everything seems to light up normal...dash lights, interior lights, radio.
Tried to jump it...same thing.
Just a click when I turn the key.

The whirring sound may be coming from the starter. You can have it tested at Autozone to see whether or not the starter is operational. If it's not the starter, I would try to start the vehicle in another gear other than park or neutral. If it starts, you have a bad Neutral Safety Switch. If this part goes out, it can shut off the starting capabilities.

I would suspect the fuel pump is the problem, it may be sticking at times and this causes a no start. The pump is located inside the fuel tank and it is electric.

In every likelihood have the Bendex of the checked up. It is not connecting the self starter motor with the engine crank shaft thus the whirring sound.

you could be getting air in the fuel system lines, sometimes caused by heat , but most the time its caused by a tiny leak in the fuel system itself, on the end of the rail that leads to the fuel injectors there is a bolt head, loosen it as someone else turns the key to the on position, if the pump is working correctly you should have fuel blasting out of that loosened bolt, if not, you have a pump problem, if it does, then you have an other problem, if the car turns over but won't start , you need to check for spark on the plugs, ( thats the easiest way ) you can see how to do that in this video along with some other things to check , watch the part about spark plugs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=064Ilsz8Fzg&feature=related

Sounds like it could be a similar issue to what I just went through. My car wouldn't start on two separate occasions after I had refilled my tank. First time happened a little over a month ago, the starter would crank, and crank, but no signs of life in the engine. Tested the spark plugs, I was getting spark, but the ****** wouldn't start.
Had it towed to the dealership, and they said after 4 long attempts, they got it to start. I took it home, and the next morning I couldn't start it again. Towed it back a second time, and it started right up for them. Drove it back home again and a a month later things started acting up again.
A few days ago the wife pulled the car out of the garage, where the car was level, stopped the car on our slanted driveway and when she came back to start it just minutes later, it hesitated, but did turn over. I filled up the tank and the very next morning, I could not start my car again.
Called for a tow from AAA, and the driver said "let me try something". Pulled out a hammer, and wacked the bottom of my gas tank 4 or 5 times. The tow guy gets in, tuns the ignition to engage the fuel pump (didn't turn the key all the way), he does this about 4 times, then the very next turn of the key it starts right up. The driver said it sounded like a bad fuel pump.
I drive the car back to the dealership (this is the third time) and talk to the same guy I had dealt with all along. He calls me later in the day to tell me they finally got it to not start and were able to isolate the problem to the fuel pump sensor. They replaced the fuel pump assembly and I was off and running.
Hope this helps!

Does this car have any electrical power? Check the 'Main' fuse in the box under the hood. It could also be listed at 'BATT' or 'ALT' fuse. If the car has no electrical power and you know the battery is good, make sure the cables aren't hooked up backwards. Try these things and let us know if it works.

Sounds like a battery if it just clicks once. You hardly get a whir whir out of the starter right? The lights may appear somewhat normal because they don't need much power to turn on but the starter needs LOTS of power to turn over. The average life of an alkaline battery is about 6 years.Good luck!
