You'll need to lift the door panel upwards in order to get it off the window ledge. Pull back the weather seal and you'll be able to remove the bolts holding the outer door handle on

The rod has come unhooked or broke. You will have to remove the inner door panel to investigate.

1996 Eclipse RS. Drivers side door wont open from outside. Its almost like the heaviness from the door is effecting the door jam.

Reading between the lines I think you are saying the handle works fine to disengage the latch but the door itself does not want to open like it is binding in the opening. If so check the door hinge pins. They can wear and then the door can sag in the opening and be hard to open. You should likewise have a small problem with closing the door if it is the hinge pins.

How do I change the driver side door handle for a '97 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS?

Check my solution for the Chrysler Sebring door handle problem. The Sebring, Avenger and Eclipse are very similar since the Chrysler cars are built on a Mitsubishi Galant platform using many parts that are identical to the Eclipse of the same years.
