Question about 1991 Ford Tempo 4 Door

Driving down the road lost all power, cuts out like not getting fuel, just filled up and replaced fuel filter can hear fuel pump kick on for a few seconds, what could the problem be

Sounds like you off easy with the pump. Could just be a clog or some water. Some things to remember before you go back:
1) Was it producing large amounts of steam or smoke from exhaust? A strong antifreeze smell means head gasket. This will rob you of all power. Since you will get back when it is cold, before you turn it on, smell the exhaust pipe for antifreeze. If there are any of those symptoms, get it towed where you can do some major work.
2) If no smoke or steam from exhaust, and if you are certain it is not the drive train, know where the fuel filter is and what it would take to do it along side the road (Many need special tools to remove). If more than a few seconds work and your along side the road, have it moved somewhere safe (remember, a car broken down along side the road is more likely to collect other cars than other where else). Since you just filled up, buy a siphon and some gas cans, take a bottle of "HEET" and "Sea Foam" to put in the tank. They both control H2O if you picked any up at the last fill up and start at replacing the fuel filter.

First thing I would do is spray some ether in the air horn to see if it will fire. If not, you will have to do some alternate troubleshooting. (Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r5821173-doesnt_car_start_gasoline_engines .) If yes, then you have verified the problem is fuel. The next thing I would do is swap the fuel pump relay with the horn relay. See if that fixes it. If yes, you just need a relay. If not, next I would replace the filter. It's cheap and easy and worth a try. The pump is expensive and hard to replace, so rule everything else out first. The relay is usually in the engine compartment relay box. I think I can see it in the pick below. The filter is near fuel tank, mounted on frame rail in fuel line. Let me know if you get stuck or have questions.

2001 chevy blazer going down road and it acted like it ran out of gas i think the fuel pump is working because i can hear it come on what are the chances that the fuel filter is the problem


i had the same problem, eventually the car wouldn't start at all. if you're hearing the fuel pump kick on, but the car is still acting funny you should take it to have your fuel pressure checked. you need 120 psi for your fuel pump to work 100% correctly. you could be getting less psi than needed. in that case you would need to replace the fuel pump..

Did you change the filter? Can you hear the pump cut in for a few seconds when you first turn the key the "run" position? If you can'r hear it, you may want to check fuses and power wires to the pump.

Truck cuts off while driving down the road.


Replace the TFI module. Ford back in 1986 thur 1993 had problems like the one you wrote about. TFI module gets hot and shuts car or truck off then when it cools sometmies starts and sometimes not.

Yesterday we got gas and going down the road had to down shift out of 5th gear because we lost power then had to down shift again cause we lost power again and so on and eventually it died. But we managed...


It seems theres some kind of fuel (gas) starvation to the carburator (or injectors if its a fuel injection).
If this has happenned after you fill her up with gas, thn probabely this gas filled is the culprit.
Best would be to drop all of the gas and check , and also check the fuel pump and the fuel filter.

92 Chevy Suburban Electrical Fuel System


Check fuel flter at fuel pick-up intank (looks like a small wire sock). Remove fuel filter and fitting at fuel rail. Blow out fuel lines w/about 35lbs air press. Ck electrical @ relay - should be 4 connectors - one is key on hot/one is always hot/one is ground and last is hot to fuel pump. Good Luck

check your fuel pressure it should be about 40 to 50 psi while driving probably bad pump
