Question about 2000 Volvo S70

2 Answers

I have 2000 Volvo S70. When I come to a stop the engine stalls or gets very close to stalling. Once in a while the check engine light comes on but it only indicates too low of an idle. Any suggestions.

Check battery, and try using higher grade of fuel with a shot of injector cleaner.

If you have one of the chain auto parts stores in your area, call first but most will scan your car's computer memory and give you any stored error info.
I suspect you may find the 'idle air control,' the PCV or the EGR valve is malfunctioning. Any of those can cause the effect you describe.

I'm having the same problem. At first I thought it was bad fuel so I replaced the fuel filter to no avail. Then I cleaned the Mass Air Flow sensor which also didn't work. Is your check engine light on?

2000 S70 GLT SE idles poorly - seems like the car is coughing. I think it could be avacuum hose but was wondering what else it might be. The car has not stalled (yet); it starts fine and seems to run fine...

If your car climbs a hill or comes from a complete stop to a moderate engine speed without dragging or stalling than you can rule out the catalytic converter. In order to check for a vacuum leak, just take a can of WD-40 or any spray oil and shoot it under the air flow sensor bellows and around the intake manifold including any vacuum trees you might find. While your doing this listen carefully for any changes in engine speed. This will help to pinpoint the leak. Regarding the check engine light, your "most" probable cause would be an oxygen sensor. Thank you, Dana

does this model have an ETS on it? Electronic throttle system. I could need a new throttle body. Sometimes the software goes bad and it will give the symptoms you described.

Have tried getting quality gasoline at a reliable station? It sounds like water in your fuel system. Add a couple bottles of Iso-Heet fuel system dryer everytime you fill up the next few times, and that should cure it.

98 volvo s70 stalling out, then finally after a day wouldnt start

If the air pump system is setting a fault, then the check valve is probably bad. If it is not addressed, eventually exhaust gases can run back through the air hose to the air filter housing and destroy the MAF sensor, causing these types of problems.

The fuel pump also fails and is a more likely cause of the stalling, and it wont set a code.

1999 Volvo S70 Stalls at stop signs and traffic lights

These models had a problem with the electronic control modules, and this is what controls the idle speed. Sometimes they just need to be cleaned, but sometimes they are defective. Volvo has extended the warranty on some of them to 10 years or 200,000 miles if it is found to be defective.
