How would I know if my thermostat is broken

If you have a temperature gauge on your dash you can read the engine coolant temperature. After overnight the gauge should be low and during about a 15 minute warm up cycle should achieve about mid range on the dash gauge. It should stabilize at this point with minimal fluctuation through out normal driving.

If you do not have a temperature gauge use an OBDII scan tool where you can read out the engine temperature as you would read the gauge.

A passenger can observe the live readout on the scanner that are equipped with such features while you operate the car.

Hope this helps.?

Hi, I have a 1999 Volvo S80 2.4 auto. Recently the temperature gauge on the car either has not moved to the halfway mark (it only moves a couple of bars) and will stay there or it will, after a short

Typically a thermostat stuck open will cause the gauge not to move because the water/engine will not heat up. If you havent already, I Suggest you see if the local Advanced auto, dealer or someone who can read the engine temperature with an infrared thermostat so you can see if the problem is the guage/sending unit and also read the fault codes if you have check engine lights of any kind on your dash. With these codes I will be able to tell you exactly what needs to be fixed/replaced. Could be an ECU, sensor, relay, fuse, bad ground etc. My name is Tim, I work for a company called AutoEcu1 we see all kinds of different ecu ecm tcu tcu abs ebcm throttle body climate control etc etc etc from any given vehicle about 1986 up 2011 or newer. I am more then happy to help you resolve this quickly and correctly feel free to post here or call when you get the codes or if you have questions.
Regards,
-Tim

Mazda temperature gauge

When the gauge doesn't work, you have to determine, is it the gauge on the dash or the temperature sending unit on the engine or a wiring problem. Try this: find the sending unit on the engine and pull the wire off it. With the ignition key on, touch the wire to a metal ground on the engine. Does the temp. gauge move? If it does, replace the sending unit. If it doesn't move, replace the temperature gauge on the instrument panel.

Temperature Gauge read HOT instantly

If the gauge does not go back to cold when the engine is cold, it could be the gauge on the dash. I am assuming the gas gauge drops with the key off.
You could unplug the temp sensor on the engine to see if it makes any difference.

My temperature gauge,Tachometer,Speedo,Fuel Tank on my 2003 Opel Astra 1.6 16v Elegance doesn't work intermittantly

connection on the back of the dash needs cleaning if you push on the dash and it all works then this is the fault. sometimes hitting it works just fine for awhile but not to hard.

Gas, fuel, and temp gauge doesn't work

You have blown a fuse..check fuse box. There may be one fuse box one in the cabin but also check for the fusebox in the engine compartment.

Need to know the proper high side/ low side gauge readings when adding freon

The high side should read a little more than 100 pounds plus the ambient temperature. On a 100 degree day the high side will be over 200 pounds. A high side reading of 250 pounds is no problem. The important reading is the low side, and it should always be about 30 pounds. Higher than 30 will produce warmer air, and under 30 will cause the evaporator to freeze up.
