Your dash lights should dim when you turn your running lights on. This is to reduce the glare for night time driving. There will be a dial on the dash near the cluster that you can adjust the brightness of your interior lights

Dash lights come on with the headlights then shut off


Do you have a dimmer for interior lamps? Like a rheostat, a little wheel that you turn up or down to brighten or dim interior lamps. Usually the instrument cluster lamps brighten and dim the same way.
Can you brighten and dim the other interior lamps?

When I turn on my head lights my dash board goes dark. Turn off headlights the dash lights come back on. Any ideas what is causing this?


Check where the brightness adjuster is for your instrument panel lighting on your vehicle because there will be one. Sounds from what you have said that this is being moved each time you are turning on and off the headlights because they are totally separate controls.

normally the cluster light are normally ajusted on most cars by turning the milage trip switch not sure what it called the bit you push in when you ajust your trip milage try turning that if its conected to the instrament cluster hope this makes sence cheers ivan

when you attempt to roll the windows down, do the interior lights flicker? or dim? or, even better wait until it is dark out side, and then go and turn on the car, and turn on the instrument cluster lights, and radio illumination lights (basically, just turn on your headlights). nowtry again. does the instrument cluster lights or radio backlights dim? if so then you know that pwoer is gettingto the right side of the windows. then the problem probably is that you need new motors for the windows [water might have screwed them up]. Now, if the lights did NOT dim, that means that no power is going there, and activating the motor. that means you might have a blown fuse...or bad depends on how old the car is. email me the specs, and i will look into it for you-Andy from Currituck, NC

Cluster went off on my 1999 buick.with remote starting comes on then when i tap brake cluster goes out.


Bypass the system completely on a permanent basis by doing the modification at this site.

When i turn headlights on...radio lights go out..they come on when i turn dimmer switch..but then dome lights wont go off...tried it on all different positions...2008 patriot


It sounds to me like you may have a defective dimming switch. Are the instrument cluster lights working as they should? Do they dim/brighten with the dimmer? If the instrument cluster is working OK, then it could be an internal problem in the radio unit itself. Your panel lights are computer controlled. The processor in the instrument panel controls them. It uses a digital signal to "tell" the radio to either dim or brighten its lights. If the radio is failing to do so, the radio is the most likely cause since the lights work on "full power" which is also commanded through the same data lines. (this eliminates the signal from the cluster and the connection through the data lines.)

Hi,

This solution will be of great help to you,even in the case of future or other dashboard problems;
Instrument cluster consists of electronic analog gauges, various warning lights, and optional tachometer. Vehicles equipped with tachometer have an electronic vacuum fluorescent transmission range indicator (PRND3L),odometer and trip odometer display. Vehicles without tachometer are equipped with a cable-operated transmission range indicator.
Instrument cluster is equipped with the following warning lights:
Battery voltage.
Cruise (speed control).
Door ajar.
Fasten seat belt.
Lift gate ajar.
Low fuel level.
Low windshield and washer level.
Traction Control.
The Body Control Module (BCM), which receives input from various sensors, sends display information to instrument cluster and operates gauges. Instrument cluster incorporates a self-test diagnostic feature to identify electronic problems. BCM, Powertrain Control Module (PCM), and Transmission Control Module (TCM) are continuously monitored by the diagnostic system.

SELF-DIAGNOSTICS
With ignition off, press and hold TRIP and RESET buttons while turning ignition switch to ON position. Continue to hold TRIP and RESET buttons until odometer window displays CODE (approximately 5 seconds). If problem exists, system will display diagnostic trouble codes. See DIAGNOSTIC CODE CHART table. If no problem exists, Code 999 (end test) will be displayed.

After diagnostic code display ends, instrument cluster will go into each of the following tests in order:
Dim test.
Calibration test.
Odometer segment test.
Electronic Transmission Range indicator segment test.
Dim Test
CHEC-0 will be displayed in odometer window. Instrument cluster will dim Vacuum Florescent (VF) display. If VF displays do not dim, a problem in instrument cluster exists. See BODY CONTROL COMPUTER TESTS in BODY CONTROL COMPUTER article.
Calibration Test
CHEC-1 will be displayed in odometer window. Each of instrument cluster gauges will move sequentially through each calibration point. See GAUGE CALIBRATIONS table. If gauge needle is not calibrated properly, a problem in instrument cluster exists.

Odometer Segment Test
CHEC-2 will be displayed in odometer window. Each segment of odometer will light sequentially. If any segment does not light, replace instrument cluster.
Electronic Transmission Range Indicator Segment Test
CHEC-3 will be displayed in odometer window. Each segment of electronic transmission range indicator will light sequentially. If any segment does not light, replace instrument cluster.

its probly a bad alternator i noticed that even the smallest of electrical problems can be traced back to the alternator it might not be bad yet but it could go any time

Engine stalls at stops and inst cluster goes off w/headlite on


check the alternator charge level .
check the battery + and - are not lossing
if nothing then you have wiring short
