Here's the procedure:
To replace a stoplight switch, first determine what type of switch you have.
If you have an electrical switch mounted to the brake pedal in the passenger compartment:

  • Unscrew the switch.
  • Unplug the wires.
  • Replace with a new switch. Adjust as needed.
  • Plug the wires back in.
If you have a hydraulic pressure switch that is mounted in the brake master cylinder:
  • Mark and disconnect the wires.
  • Unscrew the switch.
  • Screw the replacement switch in.
  • Reconnect the wires.

My cruise control is not working on my 2004 Ford Explore and not long after the overdrive is flashing

Most likely could be multiple problems such as stop light switch and overdrive button failure. If stop light switch works intermittently meaning tail lights blink at all when brake is pressed the system disables cruise control. As for the OD problem switch may be dirty or stuck or transmission is malfunctioning. Have the car scanned for trouble codes and make note of any P or T codes. Let us know.

My ford explorer brake lights will not go out when I park and turn the car off

The brake light switch is probably bad, near the top of the brake pedal is the switch, disconnect the the wire plug from it, if the lights go out, the switch is bad.

Stop lights on my 2001 explorer sport

IF you have NO brake light in the rear and NO HIGH mount stop light. You may have a BAD Brake light switch this located at the top of the brake pedal under the dash. Replace switch and that should solve your problem. Good luck and thanks for using FIX YA

It will come out once the wires are off, I have replaced dozen's of them on the 4.0 in my 20 years as a Ford dealer technician.
