Question about 1996 Ford Explorer

Wipers and AC fan work intermittently

I have a 1996 Ford Explorer:
Windshield wipers only work when they want to work. A/C/Fan only works when it wants to work. Horn won't work at all.

The offered solution is the most obvious solution.

Whereas I do not know the routing of the wires, color coding of these wires, or inter-connectivity of these wires, I have no idea as to how to verify the proper wiring from switch to device. If you can supply me with some kind of wiring diagram and/or schematic, it might facilitate my efforts.

The idea of attacking this problem through the internet was derived from failing to find a wiring diagram for the affected area(s) (horn, AC fan and windshield wipers). Although my diagnostic skills are above normal, I cannot attempt your solution without a guide as to the wiring of each affected area.

Checking switch connections and motor connections is a great solution except I do not know how to gain access to the individual components and how they are connected. If I had a wiring diagram, showing colors of the wires and the path they take from one point to another I could make these checks. I am figuring there must be a common connector where the wires go through the firewall that may have worked itself loose and is failing, but I do not know where to look or what wires to look for.

As far as the wipers go u most likely need a new wiper switch, the one on the steering column, the AC fan maybe a sticking brush in the motor, so replace the motor, I assume this is high miles, over 100,000 miles. have been a Ford dealer tech for 25 years and that is what I have seen most often

I believe the switch might need to be replaced. You can test power to switch with voltmeter or better yet a multi-meter. You can also test the resistance of the switch. You can also do this for the wiper motors and see if they are getting constant power to them. Make sure fuse is good. If you can find the relay for them, you can test this as well. Make sure shaft is not stripped inside the wiper arm where it attaches. You can use JB weld if it does, or replace them. You can go to www.autzone.com and register for full free online repair manual for your vehicle with everything you could ever need

Hi there,

Well it seems like some short circuit in the main wiring of your car, you need to check wires connected to the battery and a/c/ wiper/horn. must be something short in in housing.
you can check all that using a multimeter.
post further comments for more information...

Good Luck!!

Thanks

Most of the time this problem is caused by a clogged drain in the housing under the windshield wipers. In this same housing is usually where the air gets sucked in for the blower fan on your ac/heat system. What you need to do is remove the windshield wipers and then remove the plastic grate under the wipers. Then clean out all of the debris,leafs,dirt,etc...

Yes that is likely a switch problem. Before you buy any parts have a shop confirm my guess.

1990 Ford Taurus GL windshield wipers park in the wrong position

I have a 1996 Ford Taurus with a similar malfunction the intermittent wiper function is erratic, but the wipers park properly. I'm the original owner & this malfunction was in the car from the factory. I have a regular Ford Dealership manual & came to the conclusion that the Generic Electronic Module located behind the fuse panel is bad (computer glitch in programming) ! Ford Dealers want over $ 300.00 for a brand new module, I haven't checked with my local used auto parts recycler yet, but I know it will be less than the dealer price !
