Question about 1996 Chrysler Town & Country
Ok at this point im pretty sure its the transmission.. i have a 1996 chrysler town country van while driving onthe interstate it gave a few big jerks then wouldn't pull almost like it was in neutral .. i have no reverse gear barely have drive but it kicks out at just over 10 mph i do seem to have low gear but its hard to kick in.. when switching to drive theres a knocking rattling type sound and the car is really jerky starting out smooths out a bit if it dont shut down all together then kicks like its in neutral between 10 and 20 mph and will no longer move.. car starts and idles normally with no knocking does not knock in neutral either .. im almost 99 % sure its the trans mission but its the first time iv ran i not this sort of problem.. also baffling there is no codes being thrown usually there would be some sort of code and the check engine light would come on there is no codes or warning lights at all which is why im not so sure its the transmission also at times when it was switched to drive it would just die out not sure a trans problem would cause that issue.. also all fluid lvls are normal no sever leakage seems to be a small oil leak but it dont puddle or run
When was the last time you had transmission oil changed and the tranny pan removed and the tranny filter changed? If never, this is your starting point.
The problem with these vans is that the tranny pan is at about a 20 degree angle under the transmission near the driver front tire. The problem with this design is that these pans eventually begin to leak at the lowest point of the pan, and over time you will not notice the ATF loss. Most likely your ATF level or cleanliness/viscosity may be bad.
Don't cry 'TRANSMISSION' until you get your tranny serviced (ATf oilc change, new tranny filter, clean magnets, clean pan, clean tranny).
