Gear ratios and exhaust system on 1985 Dodge Ramcharger 4X4

I bought a 1985 Ramcharger last month. Body and interior are perfect. It is totally stock except for the stereo system. So far I've put all new filters, spark plugs and plug wires, alternator, regulator, water pump and radiator. I really like this SUV, it's alot of fun to drive and yes the four wheel drive works. It has a 360 CI, 4bbl and automatic. Can anyone tell me what the gear ratio might be. Because I want to change it. The gas mileage really sucks. Also the exhaust system came from the factory WITHOUT a catalytic converter. Does anyone know why this would happen?

Someone has removed the cat since they were mandatory for meeting smog rules (it's illegal to remove them but some people do). To find out what your gear ratio is you need to look for build tags on the body, or a metal tag on the rear diff. You can put the transfer case in neutral, jack up the rear axle, put a chalk mark on the passenger side rear tire (from rim bead to the tread) and another chalkline on the driveshaft (down the length of the shaft), then spin the tire one complete revolution and count how many revolutions the driveshaft made. If you get 4 revs of the driveshaft to one rev of the tire you have a 4.11-1 ratio ring and pinion. Gas mileage rating when new was 12 MPG ( 5.9 L 360 V8 4X4 ). There's no cost effective way of getting good fuel mileage out of your truck. You should try saving money by maintaining it yourself. Look on ebay or online classifieds for a Holley Pro-Jection 4 system if you want to improve on and off road performance and fuel mileage.

It may not have been required on that vehicle that year. I would expect the fuel economy on that rig is probably 9-11mpg.

Float sticking after rebuilding.

Sounds like you might have tryed some rtv ? It will expand and cause just that problem. If not You will have to pull off the bowl and bend the tab on the top of the float to the right spot by pushing on the float.

Have a 321 gear ratio bought another 321 gear ratio rear axle at yunk yard looks different it has spring in the cover where the gear are Will it work have a 5.2 engine

One axle may have an open differential and the other a locked. If they both have the same gear ratio and the housing is identical you shouldn't have any problems. If you had posi and the new one doesn't, then you'll obviously lose that but it won't effect anything else.

if you are talking about the trans no! the 2wd trans has a longer output shaft than the 4x4 you can have the shaft changed so that it can work if you are having trouble finding a trans.
