If you had an after-market stereo installed, the installer may have damaged the plastic clips behind the A/C cluster or disconnected the cables from these controls. Also, your blower motor may need to be checked. You may also have an obstruction (ie. debris) inside the ducts where the fan is, so the lower settings are not strong enough to turn the propellers, but the high setting is. I have a cooling fan at work that does this everyday. Good luck.

I have a 1997 bmw 318i that is overheating and the fan wont engage and steam/mist/smoke is coming from the back of the engine compartment. I replaced the thermostat, what else could the problem be?

now it needs to be pressure tested for an internal or external coolant leak. If the water level keeps dropping in an engine the coolant temp sensor will never tell the computer when to turn the fan on. was the air ever purged out of the cooling system? Because, the temp sensor will never get a reading if coolant levels are low and will never tell the computer when to engage the fan. Does the A\C work? Does the fan come on for the A\C?

Heaters only work on number 4

I am assuming that you are referring to the internal fan? If this only works on the highest speed then the problem is with the fan speed resistor. This sits under the dash in the air ducting. It is just after the fan. Replace it and all should be good!

I can turn the heat on level 4 (the highest level) and the fan works and I get heat but when I turn it on, on level 1-3 the fan doesn't come on. Is this just a fuse that I need to change?

If you are getting heat on 1 level then its probably not the fuse. Typically it means the blower motor itself, or the blower motor resister is bad.

Heat wont work on 1986 Chevrolet truck

The fan blows but there is no hot air? First check the antifreeze level in the radiator. Low antifreeze level can prevent enough fluid from reaching the heater core. Next, check the hoses leading to the firewall, which are likely 5/8" or 3/4 in size. If these are kinked or internally damaged they could prevent antifreeze from reaching the heater core in the cab. Other than that, it could be the heater core itself which is clogged or otherwise damaged.

Fan runs on 1 & 4 only. believe a reastat type problem. Agree?

The Thermostat / control board is located inside the vehicle right under the glovebox ( in fact un-hinge the glove box for a better working angle ), the board is right on the fan itself. There are ( 2 ) screws holding it in. A new board can be ordered thru CARQUEST for about 15.00. Their new model dosen't contain the small surface mount resistor that originally blew out. You cant repair the board because it's coated in epoxy "potting compound". If none of the 1 thru 4 levels on the fan work it's either the relay ( in the relay box in the engine compartment ), or the fan. If only a few of the 1 thru 4 levels works, then it's definately that control board.
