88 jetta stsrts and runs fine after 3 to 4 miles

I'd be unfastening the fuse box and looking behind it for a poor or loose connection at the fuel pump fuse. When you bump the fuse box you are jiggling the wires that plug into it. Hope this helps.

Will a 1996 VW jetta tranny match up with 1989-88 volkswagen jetta

Yes. You'll need to swap your old speedo cable and the back up light switch is different. Also the 96 transmission uses the same clutch disc as the MK2 16v, which is different from the 8v disc, it's the number of splines on the input shaft. I'm putting a 95 Jetta 5 speed into my 1986 Scirocco. Make sure you replace the throw out bearing and the clutch rod seal and bushing in the end of the input shaft.

My 97 VW jetta won't turn over. Please help!

it could be the ground wire (black) going to the starter. try putting a jumper cable straight from the black negative side of battery to the exposed metal part on the starter while a friend turns key. if it turns over then its the ground wire. if not its probably the starter solenoid or even the starter motor. solenoid would be cheaper than motor and more likely to be problem.
