You know? I have heard of 2 ways to do this, but in my day to day operations as a pro mech, basically you just hook up red to red and black to black.

The long version of this answer is: 1. Make sure the charger is OFF. You can fry somehard to replace and find fuses and relays by accidentally connecting the charger backwards. 2. Before you even connect. Make sure the post terminals are on tight by trying to wiggle them. You would be surprised how many good batteries are just loose. 3. Connect black to black and then red to red. When symbols and colors are not their, you can identify the positive terminal as the THICKER round post and the negative as the THINNER one (most of the time). OK now turn on charger making sure you have a low trickle for long charges OR a fast high chrage for jumps. That's about it. Once the car is on, turn off the charger BEFORE you remove. You might even take the extra precaution of disconnectingg from the wall afterward too. Always use MIDTRONICS brand battery and alternator testers. Good luck. (P.S. You may also want to test to see if you have any short circuits or drains in the system by connecting a 12V testlight accross the positive terminal & positive post. If it lights, you may have a short.)

Hook the lead with the red colored clip to the positive battery terminal and hook the black colored clip to the negative terminal. This can be difficult on side mount batteries to get a firm connection. The best and safest way is to remove the battery from the vehicle for proper charging. The top of the battery is marked at each terminal... + for positive and - for negative. Make sure the charger is hooked to the battery properly. If using certain chargers, make sure the setting is on 12 volts and not six. Remove the vent caps and check the electrolyte level. Top the cells off with water as necessary. Plug in the charger to an electrical outlet and allow the battery to charge. Hope this helped and best wishes.

When the battery is fully charged, be sure to unplug the battery charger before disconnecting the leads from the battery. Best wishes.

Red + goes to the positive + or red terminal on the battery.
black -- goes to the negative -- black terminal of the battery

be extremely careful you have them hooked up before you plug in the battery charger.

How to Wire On-Board Marine Battery Chargers

Battery chargers are wired into a boat's electrical system. Wiring the charger to a battery switch permits the charging of the individual batteries or battery banks. The switch can be configured to charge both batteries or battery banks at once. Mounting the charger in the vessel keeps the charger where it will do the most good--connected to the batteries. This is useful if you are stuck with low batteries and need a recharge. Power from a generator, shore power or even AC power from another vessel can be used to get you going again

Instructions Things You'll Need:
Battery charger
Battery switch
Battery cable (sized)
Cable cutters
Razor knife
Battery terminal lugs
Lug crimper
Terminal kit
Terminal crimper
Hammer
Step 1

Mount the battery switch with the mounting kit provided by the manufacturer. The switch should be accessible but close to the battery or battery banks.
Step 2
Mount the battery charger in a location that will be accessible but protected from the elements. Mount the charger close to the battery switch to reduce the size of the charger leads.
Step 3
Connect the battery cables to the battery switch. Mount the battery cables onto their corresponding terminal studs on the battery switch.
Step 4
Lay out the battery positive cable from the charger to the switch and cut it to length with the cable cutters. Strip 3/4 inch of insulation from the cable ends with a razor knife. Splice the cable to the hot wire from the charger with a **** connector and the terminal crimper. Crimp a terminal lug onto the battery end of the cable with the lug crimper and a hammer. Connect the terminal lug at the battery switch positive output terminal.
Step 5
Lay out a battery cable from the charger to the battery negative terminal block. Cut the cable to length and strip 3/4 inch of insulation from the ends with a razor knife. Connect the battery negative cable to the charger negative power lead with a ****-splice and the terminal crimpers. Crimp a terminal lug onto the terminal block end of the cable with the lug crimper and a hammer. Connect the terminal lug at the battery negative terminal block post.

Tips & Warnings
Set the switch to "1," "2" or "both" to charge battery bank 1, bank 2 or both batteries at once.

Is the charger to be "on" while charging it; then on while hooked to battery?

The portable charger should NOTE be connected to a battery while the battery is connected to a vehicle! Charge the battery off the car, then disconnect the charger and put the battery into the vehicle to start it! If the charger is not working check the fuse! If that is ok then probably damaged the circuitry!

12v battery charge doesn't work in car

A few reasons why the charger is not charging the battery: The charger itself is not working; The battery will not take a charge, the battery can be 'dead'. If you can, connect the charger to another battery, just to see if it is working. The charge indicator needle will move. If you have confirmed that the charger is working, then the battery may be beyond charging. Make sure the connections from the charger to the battery terminals are tight.

Recharge battery Cadillac Deville 2005

You do not need to remove the battery to charge the battery. When you connect the charger you MUST be careful to connect the charger's positive lead to the positive terminal to the battery and the negative lead to the negative lead to the battery before you turn on the battery charger. Connecting the charger leads the wrong way around most likely damage the vehicle's electronics.
When you finish charging the battery turn off the charger before you disconnect the charger leads. This will prevent arcing between the leads and the battery.

Ignition does nothing . Tried to connect battery charger and connections ark.

Hi,
A dead or low battery will arc when you connect a battery charger.
Have you tried to set the battery charger on the lowest charge rate ?
Do you have a multimeter to check your battery voltage ?
I am just trying to eliminate the possibility of a low or bad battery.
