The float is bad on the fuel sending unit in tank.
The filling up problem is usually caused by the hose leading down to the fuel tank since it`s in a rather cramped spot they tend to get crimped causing the gas flow to kick off when you try to fill it theres not much you can do to fix that problem, you can try to straighten the hose if it`s crimping also check your gas cap to make sure it`s not real dirty that can cause some problems with tank float but not likely the cause hope this helped.

Hello
This problem is caused by only thing, it is a defective fuel level sending unit inside the fuel tank. To replace this part requires the fuel tank be removed from the vehicle.

WHEN FUEL GUAGE REACHES HALF WAY THE NEEDLE WILL DROP TO EMPTY. TRY TO PUT GAS IN AND MAYBE GET 5 GAL IN AND THE NOZZLE CLICKS OFF. IT WILL SHOW 3/4 TANK THEN. I KNOW IT SHOULD TAKE MORE WITH THE MILES I...

from what you are describing you have two(2) different problems
1- the wacky gauge- its acting like a grounding issue- wires are crushed/smashed on tank connector
2- not filling - venting issue- vent line to top of tank pinched
3 solution- run tank down to 1/4 or less and DROP tank down to inspect wires and hoses- sounds like at some point in time the tank took a hit and wedged itself upwards against the underside, pinched the vent line so there is too much pressure in tank and also crushing the wires/plug causing the erratic readings(worse with less weight as the tank moves more)
if unsure of how to do this- you can get a manual such as a HAYES book at auto parts story- good luck

I just bought a 98' Tahoe and the gas/fuel gauge does not work. Checked the fuses and tried a new one for the gauges fuse and the gauge worked but then went back to empty. When I removed the fuse the...

The computer does a sweep test everytime it senses power. Check it next time you turn the key to run the gages do a little self test. However the fuse and gage won't be your problem. They are very bad for the fuel level sensor in the tank getting corrupted or dirty and doesn't read properly. You can try to add port fuel injector cleaner to the tank, but problem will usually reoccur. You will need the fuel tank dropped and the level sensor replaced.

Runs great til fuel tanks reaches half way mark then cuts out or dies

Are you sure the fuel gage is reading accurately most gages just use a resistor to gage how much fuel is in the tank over time its easy for the gage to read off could be running out of gas unless you know for sure it still has a half a tank?

97 altima messed up gas gauge???

very common problem, esp with high milage, the fuel vent system is plugged, because the charcoal canister has come apart and the particles have traveled thru and plugged the fuel vent valve, what happens is when you add fuel the air in the tank cant vent out as the liquid displaces the air and backs up thru the filler neck, this however can get costly.

Gas pump repeatedly shuts off when fueling.

You may have a partial blockage of the air vent. You might try something as simple as using a non-metal long strip that can reach the tank through the vent hole in the fill tube. Be very careful not to use anything that may cause a spark as you may cause a dangerous explosion. If that doesnt solve the problem. you should either remove the tank and clean it or have that done. My guess is that if the tank is that dirty you need to replace the screen and pump in the tank while you are there.
