Question about 2000 Ford Windstar

2 Answers

I have a 1996 Ford Windstar that will not even turn over. We have rigged the van to start by attaching a wire from the starter to the battery. We have already checked the starter & everything is good. We are considering the possibility of an unknown anti theft feature in our van. Can someone tell me how to reset or deactivate any security devices? We do not have an owners manual to research our problem.

I`m guessing you checked all fuses.
Have you tried just moving the vehicle a little in neutral then placing back in park to try to start it?
Have you tried a tester at starter to see if the wires are live when trying to start ?
Then the coil and then plugs and also fuse box ?
Let me know where that leads you.

Hi

It sounds like a broken earth wire, check the main one from the car battery to the car bosy, or to test it get a thick cable roughly the same as the "black" earth lead from the battery attach it to the car body somewhere and the other red to the battery terminal if the car starts you know it is an earth problem. they do often break off the gearbox on these models, so do check. there will be 3 main earth wires in total

Can a bad battery stop a windstar from turning over even if lights still come on?

It could if battery only has enough power for just the lights, what I would try first is turn the light on and try to start the van, if the lights go to dim or off, then the battery is no good, if they stay bright then more then likely it's going to be your starter, another way to test the starter is hit the starter with a hammer or some thing you can reach it while some one holds the key to start, if it starts or not replace it anyway bad starter.

Van wont start

Just maybe the battery and alt were good. You did test them, before replacing didn't you? How about the starter solenoid, starter or ground connections or cables with too much resistance. Do a voltage drop test, on all grounds, you can get to.
