Either the starter, solenoid, battery, or ignition is faulty. Starter and battery can be tested for free at most part stores. Or the neutral safety switch is faulty which is common

Replaced transmission with a used one and now it will not start. The indicator on the shift column does not show the gear that has been selected.

The shift cable linkage is likely the culprit. It won't start because the car cannot tell what gear it is in (it needs to be in park or neutral for the starter to operate).

So i parked my car yesterday and took the key out to find out park, but reverse. now i cant start my car or change the gears! i can still put the keys in and out and turn it but the car wont start or shift...

Put the key in, turn it forward 2 clicks like normal. Make sure you push the brakes all the way down and then try to shift the gear to park. Ya, cars wont start in gear, they made that way. If it still wont go in gear, try turning the steering wheel left & right. Sometimes the wheel lock can mess with ya. If not still, you need to call a mechanic. Cuz actually, if you were in reverse instead of park, the key should have never came out. Also make sure the key is in ALL the way.

Starting

Sounds like the safety neutral switch may be defective. If it gets out of adjustment or fails completely, the car will not start. Sorry, I would have to look at it to know, but some are located on the transmission and some are at the gear shift. Have the switch checked to insure the right voltage is getting to it. If the switch thinks it's in a gear other than park or neutral it will not start or turn over.

Wont start, turn over anything...but has power.

Try the gear selector in and out of all gears to start with then try and tap the starter motor with a bit of steel but not to hard ..if it starts then it can happen any time ..fix it now,,,Also sheck battery lugs to see if they are hot after turning the key for 20 seconds if so then the lugs need cleaning but it carnt be much either Starter or gear selector,,
Let me know how you go. Ron

I have a vw golf gti. P reg 1996. recently it has

Hi Frank
If as you say....Nothing is happening at all when you turn the key, you appear to have one of two problems. A faulty starter motor--or--- A faulty ignition switch. If you can tap the starter motor while another person keeps the key turned to the start position, and the engine now starts you now know it is a starter problem. When doing this PLEASE MAKE SURE THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF GEAR.
If it should start up, or even engage the starter motor while IN GEAR, serious injuries could happen, and I do not mean to your car.
Good luck

THE GEAR SHIFT WAS MAKING A NOISE AND VIBRATING FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS NOW, AND TODAY I WENT TO GET INTO MY CAR AND IT WOULD NOT START. I COULD NOT EVEN GET MY KEYS OUT OF THE IGNITION. THE CAR WILL NOT GO...

Sounds like the clutch is not catching or the trans could be having problems. It may have some loose parts in the clutch. It could be that your car has locked up in security mode. I have to do this to my grandmothers van every once in awhile. Press the brake, try to turn to steering wheel all the way to left or right and try to turn the key.
