Yesterday my Ford taurus '96 sprung a brake line leak. Immediately went into gear shift 'arrest' mode. After the new brake lines were put in, shifter became difficult to move out of Park position the first two times I drove today. After returning home from work, now I cannot move teh gear shift out of the Park position at all.
I'm going to check on the suggestion to replace the solenoid switch.
For
car not changing gears and not shifting out of park mode ,it can be shifter assembly issue, or it can also be
transmission issue. Get the shifter assembly inspected with ignition OFF.
For
more troubleshooting, I suggest you to get the Following help link checked, its
complete step by step procedure to inspect gear shift issues: -----

I did exactly that. It looks like they broke a wire connection which deactivated some sensor, which in turn prevented the gear lever from shifting. It works perfectly after they fixed the connection.
This is the kind of situ which could easily lead to a very expensive fix, if you don't set someone's tail on fire. I did, and it worked.
