If you didn't start it for a year or turn the engine over you may have a seized engine. Not a fun thing as there is no easy way to un-seize it.
You can try removing the spark plugs and spraying a small amount of penetrating oil in each cylinder but the truth is, if the cylinders sat long enough to rust and freeze up like that, you would most likely do more damage to the engine. Best option. Put a socket on the harmonic balancer nut and use a breaker bar to try and turn the motor, if it turns you have another issue if it doesn't turn you will need to rebuild the motor.

My volkswagon golfs auto transmission was making a banging sound. a mechanic told me it was rat **** and i need a new one.its a 2 litre. vin code WVWZZZ1HZTW045023. NEW OIL WAS PUT IN IT AND IT DIDNT HELP....

This particular year and next one , were the worst years for trany's on those cars.
They are failing left and right , there are no options to
get it cheap , sience junk yards refuse to sell used units , cause they coming back under 90 day warranty before warranty expires , and nobody rebuild them , when I was looking for one , for my customer ,
the only option was to buy it from dealer.
It was not cheap , so I ended up converting the car to a stick shift (junk yards sell the whole kit with pedals , brackets etc...). Customer was happy , he didn't really care what to drive stick shift or automatic. At least he won't have problem with a/t in the future , he said.

How can i check the level of my transmission fluid on a 1996 volkswagon jetta gls?

Assuming it is an automatic. With engine idling, put transmission thru all gears, put back in park, keep engine running, check dipstick for tranny. If it is a manual then you have to crawl under car and remove upper "fill" plug on gearbox, fluid will be up to that level. NOTE: unless your tranny leaks it should never be low!

1996 Jetta stops runing. I waite a while and it will restart until the next time. I replaced mas air flow sensor with new one. Now it will not start at all.

Just a thought, but I had a 1994 Jetta, and after having the timing belt and transmission replaced I had a similar issue. Whenever I would go anywhere and turn the car off it would not restart for a while. Turned out that the garage that did the work forgot to replace the heat shield somewhere around the transmission and the car kept thinking it was overheated. I took it back and had them put a new one in, since the misplaced the old one ( the reason they failed to put it back in in the first place).
If you have had anysort of engine work like that you may want to ask someone. I had taken it to several places asking about the problem, took a VW dealer to see the problem and they spotted it instantly.
Not sure if this will help, but thought I would throw it out there.
