    Hello Robert,

ok The check engine new light that has come on is being repaired Mon am. warranty is covering. This of course is being done at a different Lincoln dealer. I just pay the $50.00 deductible .

MY CONCERN IS: BECAUSE THE AIR BAG DIAG IS NOT COVERED. After reading my info I would like to take car to our local mechanic, who is excellent & very honest. I prefer to have the problem diagnosed w/fix he can do. Is it the clock thing or is it a wire disconnect from the $1100.00 repair previously done. As I stated this happened 12 miles after I left the dealer.

The power steering motor and steering rack was replaced well over a year ago.

The very slight squeeling barely noticable is inside and that has always been there when I start car in the am.

Bottom line: airbag light is on: diag code is: B1932. What is the fix? Loose wire? I'm confused. Please respond,

    Hi Robert,

ok so...diag code is clockspring. you had mentioned this Sept 9th. I'm just making sure I give my local mechanic the correct diagnosis & fix. Now a clockspring, is this expensive? Is this a replacement part exclusive to a Lincoln LS? Can a regular mechanic do this? Not just a Lincoln/Ford dealer? I'm very parenoid now after this past episode. I just need as much info as you can give me so I sound intelligent when speaking to our mechanic.

    Thanks..

    Robert,
Please read all my notes on the fixya problem AND PLEASE SEE MY ATTACHMENT TO REFRESH YOUR MEMORY W/THIS INCIDENT.
ok. Car was brought to a 2nd Linclon dealer (locally) to repair upper and lower fuel rail gaskets. diagnosed by 1st Lincoln dealer when all my problems started.
ON Monday 0800 Sep 14th. This repair covered by AAA warranty. THE AIR BAG PROBLEM STILL NOT ADDRESSED EFFECTIVE THIS DATE 17 SEP.
I have 2 QUESTIONs because today 17 Sep 09 CAR is STILL BROKEN!!!

THIS IS INFO FROM 2ND LINCOLN DEALER: MONDAY SEP 14TH:
Car is pulled apart and railings are installed. Supposedly???? he put car back together and test drove emmissions light stilll on runs diag tech scanned for fault codes and found DPFE sensor fault and vacuum leak. WHILE WORKING ON THE CAR REPAIRING THE UPPER & LOWER RAILINGS NOTICES DPFE SENSOR was damaged and held together with plastic wire-tie.

WhILE mechanic(2nd Linclon dealer was working on it HAD IT ALL PULLED APART AND NOTICED DPFE sensor WAS HELD TOGETHER W/ PLASTIC WIRE-TIE NOTICED, BUT DIDNOT TELL US WHY??? WOULD HE PUT ALL BACK TOGETHER THEN.... THEN run a diag tech scan for fault codes and finds DPFE sensor fault and vacuum leak .REASON FOR THIS STATED TO US was this was there from previous repair at 1st Lincoln dealer. (Please see my notes where I paid $1100.00 for 1st repair).
ALSO...... PCV hose was crushed on both sides with 1/8" hole on one side. SUPPOSEDLY THE TECH DID NOT SEE THIS? We found this out by taking car to a honest local excellent mechanic for over 30 years. WHOM STATED THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN SEEN BY THE 2ND LINCOLN DEALER W/ DOING THE UPPER LOWER RAILINGS AND WAS OBVIOUSLY DAMAGED WHEN THE 1ST LINCOLN DEALER WAS DOING THE OVERBOARD REPAIR TO THE TUNE OF $1100.00. AND MESSED AROUND WITH THE AIR BAG AND THAT IS STILL TO BE ADDRESSED.

1.Can a technician ONLY determine, by scanning thru fault codes that the car has a broken DPFE sensor fault and vacuum leak AFTER IT WAS ALL PUT BACK TOGETHER? WE ARE THEN TOLD WE NEED THESE 2 PARTS FOR A TOTAL OF $528.00 . BY 2ND LINCOLN DEALER.. FOR US TO KEEP CAR THERE "THAT THEY WILL ORDER 2 PARTS BUT NEGLECTED TO TELL US 1 PART WAS $15.00 AND OTHER PART $100.00 AND LABOR WAS $400.00 FOR THE GRAND TOTAL OF $528.00.
tHE HONEST MECHANIC SAYS THE DPFE SENSOR ROUGHLY $100 AND PVD HOSE ROUGLY $15.00 AND LABOR NOWHERE ANYWHERE NEAR $400.00!!!

pLEASE GET BACK TO ME. IT LOOKS LIKE I HAVE TO SHADY LINCOLN DEALERS THE 1ST DEALER EXTREMLY!! WE HAVE BEEM BACK AND FORTH TO THE 2ND DEALER OVER THE PST 24 HRS QUESTIONING THEM. OBVIOUSLY THEY THOUGT WE WERE STUPID. AND THE AIRBAG??? wE HAVE THE LOCAL MECHANIC RUNNING A DIG ON THIS IT MAY BE SERIOUS. BET IT IS. LIGHT CAME ON 10 MIN AFTER I LEFT DEALER #1.
PLEASE RESPOND W/YOUR EXPERTISE. WE ARE CRAZY W/THESE THIEVES AND ABSOLUTELY SICK OVER THIS ORDEAL..

    Hi,

Can you please see the bottom of my info. We are curious when the 2nd dealer replaced the railings and noticed the tied off defective part (he admitted this to us already. )

Was it either his incompetance that he put the engine back together w/o calling us to fix it?

Or is it not something the $100.00 per hour labor rate would not know how to fix?

Do you possibly think this was the original problem right off the bat?

I believe you or one of the other respondees indicated?

If anything my car has gotten progressively worse after it has left Lincoln dealer #1 3 times & Lincoln dealer #2 twice ?

just looking over what you have sent me already. i cannot see how they can justify a bill of $1000 on the first repair (tho i do not have the shop times handy for what they have done so far). but from the sounds of they replaced your coil pack spark plugs and wires would be helpful to know what they charge an hour for their work.

be that as it may i'm wondering if you have tried gasline anti-freeze in your gas tank yet as water in your fuel will cause the misfire that the codes indicate. and all the repairs they have done won't fix that. the check engine light is most likely on as a result of still having the misfire.

you have mentioned the slight squealing noise. is that inside the car as you turn the steering wheel or outside the car. if it is inside it is likely the clock spring (basically a spring that allows you to turn the steering wheel but still keep a connection to the air bag wiring and other wires like your horn) it may have been damaged when the changed the power steering motor but i wouldn't be sure of it.

if the air bag was not on before the repair that was done, they may have disconnect a wire that wasn't hooked up again.

the gaskets they mention are likely the injector o-rings. if i remember correctly there are two on each injector. it does sound to me like they are using a hit and miss technique to repair the car (at your expense of course) and i'm sure they will eventually get it right.

i would ask to speak to the area rep for ford, i'm uncertain if he/she may do much as the car is approx. 8 years old but it may be worth a try if nothing else but to express the hit and miss approach they appear to have been taking in repairing the car.

the most likely culprit is what as called a clock spring. mention it to your mechanic (that you trust) and they will know what you mean. the noise you hear turning the steering wheel is a clue as well. the codes from the check engine light (as it is a misfire) and they have replaced if i read your earlier post correctly, the coil pack, spark plugs and wires may very well be water in your fuel that causes the mis-fire.

there are other problems it could be due to the code. be that as it may from what you have described it would appear to be the clock spring as this is the most often issue that occurs. changing to clock spring involves pulling the steering wheel and removing some parts to get to the spring. it's removed and replaced then you assemble it again. most competent mechanics can do that. hopefully my advice hasn't overly caused you concern, tho i do feel that the first shop was performing a hit and miss approach to diagnosing the problem you had.

i would describe the problem to the new mechanic you are taking it to re: air bag light is on... the code that was given to you and the squealing noise that you had when you turned the steering wheel and suggest that it may be the clock spring that has failed.

my answers to your question will actually be in several parts.

first i suspect i know what has failed on the vehicle from experience with my ford windstar.

this a picture of what your sensor will look like. it is often located on the right side of the motor on the top near the firewall. there are two silicone tubes that attach to the fittings you see at the bottome of the sensor. the lead to L shaped fittings on a tube that runs down to the exhaust pipe. the fitting was broken off on mine. the pipe itself is relatively cheap but the "adaptor" for the pipe to the exhaust manifold was very expensive and very likely to break which would require replacement..

Now how i fixed it. you need a small length of brake line (copper tube) cut a small piece of tube and fit it into the fitting that has broken off from the tube. fit the other end into the opening where the L-shaped fitting would fit into the tube. i suspect they used a twist tie to hold that piece on but skipped the tubing. use a small hose clamp to hold it on.

sounds complicated but it is a fairly easy and cheap repair. my check engine light did not come on and i drove the van for another 150,000 k.

you will be able to see the two silicone tubes and follow them to where they attach. you will likely see the twist tie. keep in mind the sensor does fail sometimes as well.

Now to address the prices for parts. if you go to a ford dealer they have no choice but to use ford parts. (plus i suspect there is a higher mark-up for the dealer).

Call your local autozone and ask them how much they charge for a DPSE sensor for your vehicle and you will see what i mean.

I would suggest that you print out all you have detailed, reciepts, conversations with the dealer about repairs etc. and as to speak to the area rep for ford about the repairs and your disatisfaction. they should work out a resonable settlement to this issue(s).

re: the twist tie, yes the mechanic should have notified the shop foreman that more work was required. unfortunately they are on an hourly rate and their interest is only to fix the original problem and move on to the next car. they wouldn't make money waiting for the shop to call you and get authorization for further work and then waiting to see if they have the parts.

the DPFE sensor will cause the check engine light to come on and from what you described it may very well have been a "patched" repair. if you can determine who "repaired" it with a twist tie you have every right to make a complaint.

Once again i suggest that you gather up all your bills and make notes (if you don't already have them) about any conversations with the techs at either shop. ask to speak to the area rep and voice your concerns

Speedometer and Tachometer do not work

You can try replacing the resistors w/ the same value but higher wattage so they don't get as hot. But there may be another problem in the circuit that's causing excessive current to flow thru them.

Hi robert,

This could be a puzzler, Need some more info from you:

  • How do you know the battery is good? How many volts on a meter? Results of a load test?
  • If you get a jump, does it it have power then? Does it start?
  • Are the terminals clean and tight?
  • Events prior to this? Did it just start?
Give me as much info as you can.

Thanks
