The engine starts normally and then fails to shut down when the key is turned off.

Do you mean the starter stays engaged or does the engine start normally and then fail to shut down when the key is turned off?

Itsounds as though the rod that slides the positioner on your ignition switch has come loose or the swithch itself is loose and moving with the rod. To check this you've got to get to the ignition switch which is located at the bottom of the steering column. Take off the kneepad. Then you'll have to loosen and remove the two or three nuts mounting the column. This will allow you to get an eye on the switch. Check it for looseness. There are two slotted screw mounts for the switch. turn the key just a couple clicks(not over) and see if you can see the switch moving. I'm pretty well certain that your situation lies there. Thanks, Dana

How do i reset the alarm on my 2003 Chevy Trailblazer...I can't stay my truck.

Hello Narisol,

Excerpt from the 2003 Owners Manual.

Passlock

Your vehicle is equipped with the Passlock theft-deterrent
system. Passlock is a passive theft-deterrent system.
Passlock enables fuel if the ignition lock cylinder is turned with a valid key. If a correct key is not used or the ignition lock cylinder
is tampered with, the fuel system is disabled and the vehicle
will not start. During normal operation, he SECURITY light
will turn off approximately five seconds after the key is turned to
RUN. If the engine stalls and the SECURITY light flashes,
wait about 10 minutes until the light stops flashing before trying
to restart the engine. Remember to release the key from START as
soon as the engine starts. If the engine does not start after
three tries, the vehicle needs service. If the engine is running and the
SECURITY light comes on, you will be able to restart the engine
if you turn the engine off. However, your Passlock system is not
working properly and must be serviced by your dealer. Your vehicle is not protected by Passlock at this time. You may also want to
check the fuse. See Fuses and Circuit Breakers on page 5-85.
See your dealer for service. In an emergency, call the M
Roadside Assistance Center. See Roadside Assistance Program on
page 7-5.

Excerpt from the 2003 Owners Manual.

Testing the Alarm The alarm can be tested by following these steps:
1.
From inside the vehicle, Iower the driver's window and open
the driver's door.
2.
Activate the system by locking the doors with the power door
lock switch while the door is open, or with the remote keyless entry transmitter.
3.
Get out of the vehicle, close the door and wait for the SECURITY light to go out.
4.
Then reach in through the window, unlock the door with the manual
door lock and open the door. This should set off the alarm. When
the alarm is set the power door unlock switch is not operational.
If the alarm does not sound when it should but the headlamps flash, check to see if the horn works. The horn fuse may be blown. To
replace the fuse, see Fuses and Circuit Breakers on page 5-85.
If the alarm does not sound or the headlamps do not flash, the
vehicle should be serviced by your dealer.

Reset anti theft 2004 Tahoe

The security, antitheft or lock picture/icon is a visual indication that something in the car's antitheft system is failing. In most GM cars and trucks there is a hidden system that most people are unaware even exists. From the moment you put your key in the ignition, there begins a constant line of communication between your key's security chip or transponder, to the ignition's lock cylinder, and then to the car's TDM (Theft Deterrent Module). These 3 parts are in CONSTANT communication. If the key is in the ignition, then these parts are sending signals to each other. The security light illuminates when that signal gets broken, even just for a second. When the signal breaks, the car misinterprets this as an attempt at theft and goes into antitheft mode. The car thinks its being stolen or hotwired because it is not getting that signal from YOUR specific key. This is why the security light turns on and shuts down your vehicle. This link explains it pretty well.
http://www.diy-gm-security.com/

Perform the re-learning procedure
  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON (vehicle will not start).
  3. Observe the SECURITY light, after approximately 10 minutes the light will turn OFF.
  4. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 10 seconds.
  5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes ( the vehicle
  6. is now ready to relearn the Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK).
Important: The vehicle relearns Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.
Start the engine (the vehicle has now learned the Sensor Data Code and/or password).

Truck will not shut off. Running without key in the ignition. How to turn off?

If you messed with the ignition system on the vehicle to get it started without a key then you disconnect what you did to now stop the engine.

IMMO cuts fuel. that is its job, fix that secuity system.
the FSM covers this.
if you tried both the key fobs , that came with car?
do so... now....!

if not why not?
are you using only a single key , to test this? do so.
no other keys near ignition switch.
do have this, the oper guide?
page 14?

http://justgivemethedamnmanual.com/jeep/jeep-compass-owners-manuals/

next is to read the IMMO sections (immoblizer) in FSM
or alldata.com to find true cause of IMMO tripped.

quote page 14, (it's clear , no?)
SENTRY KEY
The Sentry Key Immobilizer System prevents unauthorized
operation of the vehicle by disabling the engine.
The system will shut the engine off after 2 seconds of
running if an invalid key is used to start the vehicle. This
system utilizes ignition keys which have an electronic
chip (transponder) embedded into them. Only keys that
have been programmed to the vehicle can be used to start
and operate the vehicle.
The Sentry Key Immobilizer System does not need to be
armed or activated. Operation of the system is automatic
regardless of whether or not the vehicle is locked or
unlocked. During normal operation, the Theft Alarm/
Immobilizer Light will come on for three (3) seconds
immediately after the ignition switch is turned on for a
bulb check. Afterwards, if the bulb remains on, this
indicates a problem with the electronics.

If the bulb begins to flash after the bulb check, this
indicates that an invalid key has been used to start the
vehicle.
Both of these conditions will result in the engine
being shut off after two (2) seconds of running.
Keep in mind that a key which has not been programmed
is also considered an invalid key even if it is cut to fit the
ignition lock cylinder for that vehicle.
If the Theft Alarm/Immobilizer Light comes on during
normal vehicle operation (vehicle has been running for
longer than 10 seconds), a fault has been detected in the
electronics and the vehicle should be serviced as soon as
possible.

I have a 98 monte carlo 3.1 auto trans. when i turn the key to start, the security light flashes and it does nothing

Have it checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's . I suspect the problem is with the tdm module or the ignition switch ???? Assuming will only get you into trouble . If the PCM - engine computer does not see the right coded meassage from the TDM it won't turn on the fuel injectors or it will cut them off in two seconds . .
Buick Security Systems 1998 Chevy is the same .
Ignition Key With Wrong Resistor Pellet Code is Used To Start Engine
The theft deterrent module performs one of the two following actions when you attempt to start the vehicle with a wrong ignition key:
• There are 15 PASS-Key® II resistance ranges. The PASS-Key® II resistance may be one of the 14 valid but incorrect PASS-Key® II resistance ranges. The theft deterrent module will perform the following actions when you attempt to start the vehicle (if the condition is present during an engine start attempt or for 1 second any time after the engine has started):
• Turns on the SECURITY indicator
• Sends a password to the PCM through the fuel enable signal circuit
• The password disables fuel delivery to the engine.
• Disables the theft deterrent relay, which disables the starter circuit
• Disables sampling of the PASS-Key® II resistance for 3 minutes
• The 3 minute time period is called the shut-down period.
• Disconnecting the battery will not clear the timer sequence. The timer sequence will resume when battery power is restored.
• Inserting the proper key during the vehicle shut-down period will not start the engine. The engine will not start until the shut-down period has elapsed.
• After the shut-down period, the engine will start if the correct ignition key resistor pellet is used.
• The PASS-Key® II resistance may be correct and allow the engine to start. Later during the same ignition cycle, the PASS-Key® II resistance may be one of the 14 valid but incorrect resistance ranges. The theft deterrent module will perform the following actions:
• Enters the fail-enable mode
• Turns ON the SECURITY indicator
• Sends a password to the PCM through the fuel enable signal circuit when more attempts to start the engine occur
• The password allows the fuel enable circuit to deliver fuel to the engine.
• Enables the theft deterrent relay, which also enables the starter circuit.

Ignition Key With Correct Resistor Pellet Code is Used To Start Engine
The theft deterrent module performs the following actions when the correct ignition key is used in order to start the vehicle:
• Enables the theft deterrent relay. The theft deterrent relay enables the starter unit.
• Sends a password to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) through the fuel enable signal circuit. As a result, the PCM allows fuel delivery to the engine.

1999 ford explorer want shut off when key is turned off and is taken of key cylinder

there is a rod or rack inside the steering column that pulls back on the ignition switch. the ignition switch is bad or the rod is bent from tilt steering if the wheel is slammed up. on the otherhand the switch may be right inside the colum attatched to the ignition tumbler> either way it is an ignition swithc problem.

I have to take the fuse out to shut off the engine

if engine does not shut off when turning key to off. its most likely the ignition switch thats bad. many people consider the switch and lock cylinder to be the complete switch. but on many vehicles it is located at the bottom of steering column. the place where you put the key is just a lock cylinder and a rod operates the ignition switch. but some vehicles have the ignition switch in behind the lock cylinder, but that depends on the make and model. first, remove the steering column cowling, look for ignition switch bolted to the underside of the column (1 x 2.5 inch box with large wires, about 8 wires going to it)
undo the two bolts and pull it away from the column.
try to operate the ignition switch manually, sliding the rod forward (start may be springed) and back, if the engine doesnt shut off when the rod is all the way back toward you, replace the switch, good-day!
