Take a finger and place it over the #1 cylinder plughole, after the heads are back on of course, and have some one else turn the key in very quick spurts util you feel the commpression of "that" cylinder against your finger. Do this very slowly and once you feel the pressure you shoul also be able to see the timing mark on the crankshaft very near the timing mark TDC top dead center coming into alignment. At this point just turn the crankshaft mounting bolt with a 1/2 inch drive ratchet wrench and the appropriate socket until it is on TDC. Then insert your distributor which will turn clockwise. So you have to account for this movement until the rotor points directly at the number 1 cylinder plug wire insert. It is usually marked on the distributor cap on a GM product. Make a small indicator on the ridge of the distributor housing to match the mark.Using a large black marker works well. That's about it. Thanks, Dana

I have a 1998 Cadillac Deville with a northstar engine. I am having an issue with overheating and water not being taken into my radiator. I was told when i first bought it that it had a blown head gas

If you bought a car with head gasket issues
replace them, don't use it & ruin the engine

We can't guess at all the cars possible problems

People sell a car when they don't want the expense
of fixing it

The type problem is best left to a person that works on their
own vehicles & gets it cheap, knowing they have lots of
work to do every were ,to restore many things

I have a coolant out the exhaust problem I know it's the head gasket. What caused the headgasket to go bad?

The Cadillac Northstar 4.6L V8 is known to chew threw headgaskets because of the head bolts pull out of the block from the threads, the block is not threaded enough to "hold" the bolt under extreme pressure. Many of the mechanics I have known consider it a design flaw. I personally avoid any FWD Cadillac after 1995, the last year of the somewhat reliable 4.9 V8. If you like big American FWD cars, strongly consider the similar Buick Park Avenue, powered by the venerable 3800 V6... after you dump your Cadillac of course.

I have a 1997 Cadillac Sedan Deville that did the same thing. I replaced the same things you have replaced on yours. The end result was a blown head gasket which I have found out is very common on older model Cadillacs that we own. After replacing the head gasket (which cost me parts/labor $2,200.00) at a reliable mechanic's shop that I have used for over 20 years, the car does not over heat. When I replaced the head gasket, my Cadillac had 131K. However, I have seen blown head gaskets on Cadillacs (similiar year/model) with as little as 50k at used car dealerships. Cadillacs are terrific vehicles but I've found out that bad head gaskets on older models are common problems. Good Luck...Hope this helps a little. A. Levisy in Virginia

Hello: You may have a stopped up radiator. A temp sensing heat sensor will tell you. Auto Zone or advance auto. Are you sure the head gasket is not leaking? Does coolant fill up the surge tank and bubble with engine running????
