If you turn the headlights on with the car off and have an assistant watch them they should "dim" if the starter is getting current and trying to engage when you try to start the car. If they do not dim when you try to start it then the key is not giving the starter the signal to turn over. If you don't have an assistant, turn the headlights on AND the dome light and check by yourself, it just makes it more difficult.

Most likely needs to have starter solinoid replaced very common on GM vehichles. It is mounted on top of the starter and signals the starter to throw the drive out to engage flywheel

When the starter was out did you look at the teeth on starter drive? If they look worn or beat up it could be that the flywheel ring, has missing teeth so it won't engage.

I put a starter on a 95 dodge dakota sport but the starter drive will not engage tne to the flywheel

There probably needs to be shims installed between the starter and the engine block to allow proper spacing for the starter gear to engage the flywheel teeth.

Starter won't engage

I would guess the steering fluid has gummed up your solenoid, making it difficult for your starter to engage the solenoid.

When testing starter out of truck works fine, put starter in truck and under load starter stays engaged, rip

Either the solenoid is getting power when it should not be, or the starter drive is not aligned with the flywheel.

Won't crank over

The solenoid on the remanufactured starter may be defective. Also, sometimes it is necessary to shim a solenoid to get it to engage the ring gear properly.

I just had my starter replaced on my 85 Jaguar XJ6 and sometimes when i go to start it, it makes that sound like when you turn the key and the car is already started and sometimes the starter wont engage...

either the starter is not engaging all the way or there is a bad spot on the ring gear, remove the starter and turn the engine and check the ring gear if its good then look at the starter

I turn the key and sometimes it will just click and not turn over. I try this 2 or 3 times and then the starter engages and the vehicle starts.

Either the solenoid or the starter motor itself. You need either a test light or a voltmeter to check for power at the starter side large terminal of the solenoid when it just clicks. If you get voltage or light every time it clicks, the starter motor is defective. If you don't get voltage or light when it just clicks, the solenoid is defective.

Also check to see if there is power in the start wire form the ignition switch, the wire is a white wire with pink stripe, most likely not a common problem, but still something that could go wrong. this wire will feed the starter relay under the hood...

Truck want start

It may be your starter solenoid. The ignition key only engages the solenoid not the starter itself. If the solenoid is jammed it wont engage and switch power to the starter motor. you can easily check this by locating the heavy cable lugs on the solenoid (a metal tube about 1.5 inches in diameter normally mounted on or next too the starter motor) and shorting them with a wrench. You will get as spark but the starter should spin. If this happens you know it is the solenoid that is the problem.

You can sometimes free a stuck solenoid by tapping it gently with a hammer. However a more permanent solutionis to take it off and clean it, It may be jammed because the steel core is jammed in the coil. Fix this by cleaning. Otherwise the electrical contacts at the end may be damaged or dirty. Clean these up and make sure they contact properly. Use electrical switch cleaner.

Good luck
