Check the power to the selenoid(top of the starter) if you know how and can,try jumping power from the battery to the red cable on the starter,if it works you may have a bad switch(not the key one) theres a switch that gets actuated be turning the key, so check the starter first

Car is 1994 firebird with 3.4.Ran when parked but now turns over and hits trying to start but goes to backfiring and wont start

Try spraying carb cleaner in throttle body , see if starts ! Do you have a security light on the dash ? How many miles on it ? And is the spark happening at the right time ? jumped time , timing chain !

98 firebird, all dash lights quit working while i was driving it, and when i killed it it wont start back up

Sounds as if you may have burnt out a fusible link. They are usually located in the + side of circuits near the battery or near the starter motor. You can test them with a voltmeter.

I have a 87 Pontiac firebird. I got it from a friend and drove it home. I drove it a round town a little then parked it by my house. I went to start it and nothing happened, i thought the battery was dead...

Probably not a fuse. When turning the key to on, does it give indication of power in and power out of the ignition switch-do the warning lights and gauges on the dash turn on?
If the key switch is sending power, next thing to check is the starter motor. You could take it off and have it tested, it and the starter solenoid mounted on the starter, or you could do some quick electrical testing yourself, if you have a test light or multi-meter.

If you pull off the small purple wire to the starter solenoid on the starter, you should check if the wire has power when the key is held in crank position. If it does have power, the starter or solenoid is faulty. If no power on the purple wire in start, then power is lost between the key switch and the solenoid. This part of the start circuit includes the neutral safety switch on the transmission (or the clutch switch if manual transmission), and a starter relay somewhere under the hood. Check the neutral safety switch for continuity in park or neutral. The start wire out of the ignition switch goes to this safety switch, and power is passed on to the starter if gear is in park or neutral.
Not likely the starter relay is bad, but you may need to find and check it, if all else fails.

1988 Trans Am will not start when ignition is turned all the way.

Take a test light to the small wire on the starter and have someone turn it to the start position. If the light lights up and the engine doesn't turn over, I would suspect the starter itself. If the test light doesn't light, try it in neutral and repeat test. If it still doesn't light up, it may be the PRNDL switch or the ignition switch itself.

Car only starts sometimes

The start circuit from the ignition switch to neutral safety switch to the solenoid on the starter might be bad. Look for power there at solenoid or at neutral safety switch when it doesn't want to crank over.

Starters does not turn over when switch is engaged,

Yes the sucurity does have a lot to do with it not starting. If you have a chip in your key you might have to have your ignition changed or sucurity reset.

At times cranks and runs fine other times it will not crank

Hello edspring1...the little key chip you mentioned is the onboard security system for your firebird...GM called it the VAT system..it's possible this could be the cause of the no start conditions, sometimes they will reset if you disconnect the negative battery cable for 30 mins.
I really dont think that is your problem though...under the steering pillar...there is a "slider" type ignition switch...meaning...the terminals slide togather to make contact when the key is turned...these darn things get worn to a point they start arching and eventually wont make contact at all...i replaced one last week on a 95 firebird that had the same problem you are describing now.
i'll post a pic of the slider set in position for a tilt steering and non-tilt column....note the difference.
Good luck...i hope this helps...please rate me a fixya.
