Cant find the thermostat on my Daihatsu Applause

I have had a look at the water jacket at the top of the engine, the car gets really hot and when you stop you can hear the water bubbling into the expansion tank. I had the car serviced but the mechanic said it was fine ?? I have my doubts that he had a look.

It shouldn't be bubbling into your overflow tank.If you follow the top radiator hose from the radiator to the other end of the top radiator hose the housing it connects to has your thermostat inside it.

On the Daihatsu Applause 16 valve engine the thermostat is NOT located under the alloy housing that attaches the top radiator hose to the head. It is located ay the back of the engine block at the opposite end of the engine just above where the alternator is situated. Three 10mm bolts hold the thermostat housing to the block. The bottom radiator hose is attached to the housing. All you need to do is disconnect the water temp sensor wire, undo the three bolts & push it toward the alternator. Remove the thermostat from the block replacing it with a new one. A rubber gasket fits around the outside of the thermostat & I used a little silicone on the gasket to hold the thermostat while you re-install the housing. Don't forget to reconnect the temp sender wire & fill with coolant.

let the car get up to operating temp and squeez the top radiator hose, if you feel the coolant squeeze out into the motor you thermostat is fine, but if you feel the hose and it feels presurized you need a thermostat. Also check to make sure the fan is operating at operating temp because that would cause overheating. ALL vehicles require the cooling system to be bled. Some have a bleeder screw (usually near the thermostat ) if not fill the radiator and keep toping it off at the coolant tank.

Bubbling water in the water tank

i suggest you have ablown head gasket and possibly you need a new thermostat. a radiator service centre will be able to check the water for combustion gases for virtualy no charge and then you will know for sure.

chances are the back coolant passages in the engine block are probably plugged up. resurfacing the head don't help with cleaning the passages. best thing is to get something like prestone super flush and flush the block thoroughly. follow the instructions step by step to be sure it reaches optimum operating temperature, then the thermostat opens and the HOT flushing fluids can do the intended job, scrub the gunk and deposits away. it being an older car may take 2 or 3 thorough flushes, or take it to a place like firestone for a good, strong, powerful 'backflush'...
