Check your throttle position sensor. If thats ok, then your transmission may have issues with gear selecting and your governor.

I have a 2006 Toyota 140i manual transmission. Whilst waiting at the stoplight with the engine at idle ,the revs suddenly race up to 4000rpm & come down on its own. What could be the problem .

Following are the reasons for unstable engine rpm:
- Vacuum leak at intake manifold or Cracked intake manifold.
- Idle speed control valve is not re-learned.
- Weak cylinder compression or intake valve clearance is too low.
- Mass Air Flow sensor dirty or faulty.
- Fuel pump pressure is too low or high.
- Accelerator pedal sensor faulty.

Engine shut off at 4000rpm

this sounds like an electronic problem. the control unit thinks about 50000 cycles in a second. it's bound that there could be a problem. a second hand black box or computer box should fix your propblem. goodluck

I ahve 2001 stratus and when in neutral it goes up to 4000RPM

The cars computer takes fire away from the cylenders to prevent over reving. If you make it do thie too much it can foul the plugs.
