Question about Geo Metro

1 Answer

1990 Geo Metro. Driving down the road with the a/c on the car loses power and starts slowing down. Also hear a sound, like compressed air being released the wife says under the car behind the front seats, I think its coming from exhaust. I spoke with a couple of people who say vacuum leak or ignition module. The a/c is also not cooling properly. I can turn the a/c off and the motor picks back up. A few minutes later I turn the air back on and it runs fine for awhile. Thanks for your help.

ran it without a/c runs fine sound of air only happens when there is a power loss. i'm thinking maybe a clogged converter.
    Thanks for your input

How about trying this without the A/C. Drive down the road and see if it loses power after about the same amount of drive time. As for that "air" the wife is hearing, it may be an exhaust leak caused by a bad exhaust system (has a hole in it) and the catalytic convertor being clogged up, which is causing the engine power problem.

It sounds like the ac compressor is building up to much head pressure.Check the cooling fans to see if they come on when the ac is turned on.The cooling fan should come on when the ac is turned on.This keeps the head pressure down so the freon keeps cool enough to cool the vehicle.Check the cooling fan,or fans to see if they are working when the ac is on,let me know if I can help you any more.

Could be Transmission related. Have you checked the Fluid level?
Also have you changed anything recently like new tires? Its not uncommon for some tires like (Hankook for example) to make road noise?

Your catalytic convertor is stopped up, common problem on Geo's! Will burn an exhaust valve if you keep driving it!

Replaced to valves on center piston on 1990 geo

timming is not the issue, sounds like the valve seals are leaking, or the piston rings are severly worn. these engines are fairly simple to just rebuild the entire engine.....ie...seals,rings gaskets, maybe a have the head dropped off and have it checked for cracks or warpage.

Laging 1994 metro geo that is losing horse power

If your geo is losing power ,first thing to do is a comprision test .
if its testing any thing below 100 psi you may have to replace the piston rings.

Have a 91 geo metro. losing power. sometimes down to 35mph. someone suggested adding lucus. what do you think

There could be lots of reasons. You need several things mechanically to make the engine work: fuel, air (compressed), and an ignition source (spark).

Without getting too technical, check the basic things first. Are the spark plugs clean and not broken? Are the spark plug wires hard and possibly cracked or are they nice and soft the way they should be like new wires? Is the carb or fuel injectors clean? Is the air filter dirty? Is the fuel filter clogged? Are the fuel lines/connections leaking?

Check those basic things first.....then move onto more complicated things next.
