Wait! Don't spray WD40 on any clutch!

The clutch is supposed to GRIP .. not SLIP...
It can also catch fire!

The compressor may have too much refrigerant... have the pressure checked and capture (don't release) the excess refrigerant. And yes, add oil to the system.
You can do it yourself, but you need some experience...
Any shop / service ststaion will do it for $30 ~ $40...

Hope this helps!

Oh.. yeah ... two other possibilities before you consider changing out the compressor:

    1. Worn and/or dirty / oily fanbelt. Replace it($10) with a new one and clean all pulleys before installing.

    2. The belt tensioner (the idle pulley that has a coil spring in it) may be bad. Replace ($18) if the belt seems loose when the engine is off. You can have the tension checked, too, before replacing it.

Don't use "belt dressing" if someone suggests it ... it can damage the compressor or bust a belt.

This is most likely the compressor clutch. Spray around the face of the clutch (A/C pulley) with WD-40. If you do this with the engine running it will probably cease immediately -- but be very careful if engine running -- oil can be slung into your face.

You're not spraying the clutch. You can replace the whole thing or you can spend $2.00 for lubricant to get it to stop making the noise. I've have seen this remedy used and have used it myself for 30 years -- never a problem. But, I give...

What could be causing loud grinding noise when i switch on aircon? Aircon now not working but only makes loud sound.

Sounds like the bearing or part of the clutch in the A/C compressor has failed, or possibly component on a/c fouling on something due to recent repairs however would be unlikely and probably just a coincidence..

Check A/C compressor turns by hand, should be firm but not make any noises.

Check for fouling components related to a/c compressor clutch.

NEW AC COMPRESSOR MAKING NOISE

Did you add the correct amount of oil to the compressor? Is it overcharged? Did you evacuate all the air with a vacuum pump before charging? Was the fixed orifice replaced? If you are sure you did the install right and the oil and charge are correct you have another defective compressor

I'd feel best if you can find a reputable mec and have it looked at. There are a mess of things that can make loud noise. You could have anything from a bad berring to a blown engine. When your'e on the road remember go to someone who is reccomended or a national chain or dealer..

A/C makes very loud humming sound

When you charged it did you add the ester oil per manufacturer's requirements or did you just add the gas? That sound is probably metal grinding on metal inside your compressor.

I have a loud tic and wineing sound and the oil light comes on i add oil and it got worst

Make rure you are using 5W oil. That is if it a 1.8T. The loud tic and wineing sound could be the power stearing pump. Check to see if that is low. It is located front right behind the DS headlight under the hood. DO not for any reason use any other brand then VW PS fluid. The kind sold at auto part stores will cost you $300 at least in damage. They will ruin the hose and make any leak worse.
