1994 Astro 4.3 TBI Z. Problem=fast Idle & high pitched squeal. Vacuum leak. At higher rpm the squeal went away. I sprayed wd40 near the drivers side base of the Carb-Fuel injector unit where the squeal was coming from. As the wd40 got sucked into the vacuum leak the engine would miss as wd40 does not burn in the engine. Therefore locating the vacuum leak. Turn engine off. I the sprayed something to remove the wd40 so something could stick on the area, I had starting fluid handy. I applied a liberal amount of rtv gasket sealer on the mounting area right under the throttle mechanism. The sound subsided some & idle improved some. I used spray paint to finish seal the gasket leak(my girlfriend laughed at me when I said I was gonna fix the van with spray paint!), verses removing the unit & going through all that WITH A $600 BEATER! It worked, now the idle is normal, the squeal is gone & its painted nicely in that area! This was not an easy thing to diagnose! I've searched the whole net & nobody had an answer for this problem which seems to be common.

YOU CAN REMOVE THE SERPENTINE BELT AND START THE ENGINE BRIEFLY TO SEE IF NOISE IS STILL THERE. IF NOISE IS NOT PRESENT CHECK ALL BELT DRIVEN COMPONENTS FOR LOOSE BEARINGS OR EXCESSIVE MOVEMENT. IF NOISE IS STILL THERE THEN PULL DUST SHIELD UNDER VEHICLE AT FRONT OF TRANSMISSION. THIS WILL ALLOW YOU VISIBLE ACCESS TO THE STARTER DRIVE(THE PART THAT MOVES OUT TO ENGAGE THE FLYWHEEL ON BACK OF ENGINE)WITH AN ASSISTANTS HELP START THE VEHICLE(WEAR SAFETY GLASSES)AND WATCH AND LISTEN. IF THE NOISE IS IN AREA OF FLYWHEEL YOU WILL SEE THE STARTER DRIVE(IT HAS TEETH ON IT)STAYING ENGAGED TO THE FLYWHEEL, IF THIS HAPPENS YOU CAN TRY SHIMMING THE STARTER BUT MOST LIKELY THE STARTER WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO A BAD STARTER DRIVE(OR BENDIX) RETURN SPRING. HOPE THIS INFORMATION HELPS!!

Could be your alternator or a bad idler pulley. Is the transmission good? It may be the tranny or your differential whining.

Whining noise while accelerating in 1st gear

Check the idler and tensioner pullys for your serpentine belt. I suspect the whining noise heard earlier was due to the fact one was getting a bit stiff or rough turning. When you gave it that extra fuel, the sudden load may have finished it off. Sometimes they lock up, and sometimes they fall apart. Check those items first.

Same problem: a high pitch whine after extended driving

Sounds like a dry/failing bearing or power steering pump noise. You first need to try to track down where the noise is originating, and the most likely place is at the front of the engine.
I would start by listening with the hood up while parked with the engine running and the noise present, and seeing if it is coming from there. If so, the most likely cause is something connected to the belt - e.g. AC compressor clutch, tensioner, power steering pump, or generator. Can also be caused by the belt just slipping (warn out belt, tensioner not working properly).

There may be a small hole or cut in a vacum line or possibly just loose. Also make sure the air filter box and the big hose to it are secure and clamps etc are tight. Pulleys and belts can make a high pitch sound also.
