Make sure that the idle motor is working. When you start it should run about 1200 rpm for a few seconds then go down to 600 rpm If not it may need cleaned or replaced.

Idles roughly, then low when stopped or in park, then dies. Decreasing gas mileage. Slow to accelerate

Sometimes that's caused by a vacuum leak near the manifold area.

Sometimes air in the coolant will cause an idle problem. Air will keep the air temp sensor from sending proper info.
Hope this helps.

his problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control

My V6 1992 PATHFINDER IDLES RICH AND SURGES AT IDLE.

You need to Replace your Gas Cap. The Seal is worn and it is allowing Air to get inside the Fuel tank Causing your Rough Idle.

1987 F 150 Problem: engine idle stalling and then surges

I had the same symptoms on my 1993 F-150. A friend of mine commented that he could smell gas in the exhaust. Eventually, it got to where it would start, then die after a few minutes and wouldn't restart after that (at least for several hours). It turned out to be a bad fuel pressure regulator that was causing it to flood. It was about a $25 part and an hour labor to replace (not difficult, just awkward getting to the hex head bolts).

Engine won't idle

problem sounds like IAC (idle air control) or EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) Is there a check engine (MIL) light on with rhe issue. I just replaced an EGR valve on a camry this weekend with the same issue.
