In 1983 I believe the fuel pump was still external(not in the tank) You've got to keep in mind I've been repairing all types of vehicles for 40 years, so some of these things get beyond me. If it is or is not internal, try to feel(external) or hear(internal, cap removed) for the pumps activity while the key is being turned on and over several times for the on position just a couple for the turning over.

Have you checked the fuel filter lately?

No, I'm sorry, I was speaking about the "fuel pump itself" that is what the preceding instuctions were for.

Its the electric ignition module. its a box on the driver side under the hood, by the tire on the finder well. it will have three plug-ins on it. It will need to be replaced it shouldl cost 25 to 35 $ because it will just get worse and worse.and when you need it the most it will go out GOOD LUCK!

Just got a1986 300zx starts with a push button start runs ruff when driving unless I turn the key to the start position run normal for a few then starts to backfire. Any idea what

Since you are a DIYer, I highly recommend you invest in a repair manual from your favorite parts store, or barrow from library, or
try filepeep.com if they have it, or manualslib.com
DIY auto salvage yards have an interchange terminal. You can search Ebay for the replacement part and it will show all models the part will fit. Backfire, Timeing some where. Either spark system or more likely Valve. Or the Air mass meter is bad. I had a bad one and it ran terrible.

97 ford Taurus runs ruff backfires

I would suggest you start with the basics. Check your wiring on your spark plugs to ensure they are in the right order. If you can grab an OBD scanner, I'd start with it as well. It can reveal many mysteries. Your running rough usually sounds like a timing issue. If there are over 100,000 miles on the vehicle, the timimg belt will be suspect.
Best of wishes.

My car is stalling when idling and sputtering when driving like it is losing power

Try some gas line anti freeze (methle hydrate) It will dissipate water which may have been at the bottom of the tank. If he put regular gas and you put super, add octane boost. and drive for half hour and it will clear.

Scan it first. I suspect you might be having fuel related problem.

4.5 liter engine runs ruff intemitent seems rich. smokes at firewall. Runs fine when cold. Runs ruff after 4 or so miles.

Hi I own a cadillac with the same motor. Never smoked but had all the same issues, ran fine cold but after a little driving (less than 2 miles) it shook like nothing else. The cause was the motor self destructed had to replace valves all 8 bosh injectors 2000 dollars later she is like new. Sorry about the bad news goodluck.

Motor was running smooth new cambelt service ect, adjusted timming because could hear pinning on accelaration switched car off for one hour, while looking for an electrical fault on aircon turned aircon...

if you turned the motor backwards and then tried to start belt could have jumped this is a interferance motor which means the valves overlap the pistons ! you could have bent the valves.take it back to the person who did your timing belt

1988 F-250 460 engine stalls when dribing down the road

On older, carbureted engines, cold stalling (and hard starting) is most often due to an automatic choke that is sticking, misadjusted or broken. Cleaning the choke mechanism with aerosol carburetor cleaner may free up the choke allowing it to work properly again. If the choke housing as an electrical heating element, the element may not be receiving voltage when the key is on, or the element may have burned out (check resistance with an ohmmeter).

Other causes of stalling with a carburetor include an idle speed adjustment screw that is set too low (turn screw to increase idle speed rpm). The engine may stall if the idle fuel mixture screw(s) are not adjusted correctly or the idle mixture port(s) are dirty or clogged with fuel varnish deposits (clean the carburetor and readjust the idle mixture screws for smoothest idle). Stalling can also occur is there are vacuum leaks in the carburetor, under the carburetor (bad base gasket), or any vacuum hose connections to the carburetor or intake manifold
