Hi,

Please follow the below mentioned steps to install a new timing belt:

Remove the Timing Belt

  1. Disengage the negative battery cable and safely secure the car on jack stands.
  2. Detach the passenger side splash shield and clips, the lower alternator cover plate and drive belt and the water pump pulley.
  3. Release the crankshaft pulley and its bolts.
  4. Undo the retaining fasteners and lift the timing belt cover off the engine. Align the crank and camshaft timing marks.
  5. Relax the timing belt tensioner but do not take it off. Pull the tensioner from the belt and check the pulley for indentations, cracks or signs of loose fitting or worn out bearings.
  6. Take off the timing belt.
Install the Timing Belt
  1. Examine the cam and crankshaft sprockets. Replace if there is excessive wear or other damage.
  2. Position the new timing belt on the sprockets.
  3. Relax the timing belt tensioner so it can make contact with the belt. Adjust the belt to the tension recommended in your vehicle owner's manual.
  4. Align the timing indicators on the cam, crank and other sprockets.
  5. Return the engine to the 0° mark by turning it clockwise for two revolutions. Secure the timing belt cover by tightening its bolts and nuts to 97 inch pounds (11 Nm).
  6. Reinstall the crankshaft pulley. After fitting the pulley's keyway to the crankshaft's timing belt sprocket secure the bolts at 8 to 12 foot pounds (11-16 Nm).
  7. Reattach the alternator cover plate, clips and splash shield. Secure the cover plate bolts at 89 foot pounds (10 Nm). Lower the car and reconnect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and look for leaks.
DO let me know if it helped.

Thanks
Kanu

Try the autozone.com website. If you register the vehicle you will have access to an online repair manual for the car. It's free and the steps for changing the timing belt may be available there. Regardless, it's a handy resource for doing maintenance on your car. Hope this helped and best wishes.

I've never done one on a Ranger, but most timing gears have alignment marks that you line up before you install the belt. Don't forget to replace the belt tensioner while you're at it.

Sounds like timing belt not on correctly. Check timing marks are aligned correctly when installing timing belt. This vehicle should have 2-3 marks to be aligned when installing belt.marks should be on cam gear/ crankshaft gear and intermediate shaft if engine is equipped with it.

Timing belt broke. does it have an interference.

No your engine is not an interference engine you should have the chrysler 3.0 liter engine i believe in your van, I changed a timing belt on one of those 2 years ago because the belt broke, after installing the new belt the van runs fine, so to my knowledge that engine if you have it IS NOT interference you should be able to install a new belt and it will be fine....
