Has anyone found the problem? My 2003 has #3 cyclinder misfire and I have replaced the plugs and wires. It runs rough at idle but smooths out at highway speed. Anyone have any knowledge on this? This sounds like a common problem.

I had the same problem with my sebring 2003. The problem was a burnt valve , the plastic intake manifold was leaking air into cylinder leaning out the mixture and eventiually burned the valve.

Did you change the wires? Most people don't know that plug wires need to be changed just as often as plugs. They get worn out quick. Also check voltage pulse coming from crank sensor to see if it sending signal to module and coil packs.
Also check that you do not have any stuck or leaky injectors.

It may mean that one or more of the following has happened >>>

Faulty spark plug or wire which i'm sure you already checked.
Faulty coil (pack) - You already checked

    Faulty oxygen sensor(s)

Faulty/leaky fuel injector or non consistant power to #3 injector

    Burned exhaust valve
    Poor compression

    Defective computer

I have the same problem. changed the plugs, wires, coil pack, crank sensor and the oil sending unit, I'll post later to let you know what happens after I change the fuel filter and injectors. This is personal now. Not stopping untill I figure this out..
The engine light is on showing a misfire in cylinder 3. the car shakes at stop lights an then the engine light flashes, but once you give it gas the engine smooths out. (the engine light stays on)

Can you follow-up on the work you have completed so far...did the problem get resolved? I have the same misfire #3: replaced wires, plugs, uim and lim gaskets and upper intake, and #3 coil pack. Still have the same idle shake and loss of power. If I unplug the wire from the #3 plug the idle smooths out. I'm at a loss, please help..Chris

Gentlemen, I know your pain! The stupid 3rd cylinder is under the Intake and you have to remove it, fix whatever the issue may be, then put it back on just to figure out that the issue did not go away! My head a bad connector plug on the fuel injector and that was the reason for the missfire on my 02 S-type....I still have the damn Ignition Coil A code P0351 coming on and there vehicle is running fine, with no problems, just the damn code keeps popping back up!

Clint what happend when you replace those parts. I have right now misfire on cyl.1 and replaced the MAS sensor, checked the injectors, moved coils and plug one step to the right and the error stays with cyl. 1.
My symptoms are the similar as your. If i clear the code it will stay away until it fails again.

Car sputtering badly. Codes P303 n P102 show on diagnostics and have replaced both parts associated with these codes,PLUS, new fuel filter, engine still sputtering badly.

Hi,

I hope I can help with this. This could mean the engine spark plugs or plug is the issue. Also check the exhaust pipe. White smoke indicates a coolant issue. Check your coolant reservoir. Black smoke indicates a Fuel issue. Blue is an oil issue. Also, speaking of your spark plugs there very well could be a misfire.

the code P303 could be cylinder 3 misfire
P102 the mass air flow sensor which is on the air filter cover. It's an electrical part and is sensor. Please check these and let me know.

2006 grand prix gxp 5.3. When you are driving normally it will miss from 50mph and up. When you punch it it doesn't miss a beat. I cleaned the maf sensor and air filter, Plugs were replaced.

It's probably a coil breaking down , have a scan tool hooked up an have misfires checked to see which cylinder is missing .
Ignition Coils
Each ignition coil has an ignition 1 voltage feed and a ground. The engine control module (ECM) supplies a low reference and an ignition control (IC) circuit. Each ignition coil contains a solid state driver module. The ECM will command the IC circuit ON, this allows the current to flow through the primary coil windings for the appropriate time or dwell. When the ECM commands the IC circuit OFF, this will interrupt current flow through the primary coil windings. The magnetic field created by the primary coil windings will collapse across the secondary coil windings, which induces a high voltage across the spark plug electrodes. The coils are current limited to prevent overloading if the IC current is held high too long. The spark plugs are connected to their respective coils by a short secondary wire. The spark plugs are tipped with iridium for long life and efficiency.
Drive it long enough like that (with it misfiring ) the check engine light will flash . This is to warn that a catalytic converter damaging event is taking place . This would also set a DTC - diagnostic trouble code

I have a 97 dodge caravan 2.4L dohc. I started with an engine code of p0303 and p0304. The vehicle has a rough idle and has difficulty accelerating from idle to 35mph. I've run several tests; 1, pulled all...

DTC P0303: Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected
Probable cause:
  1. Control unit software needs updating
  2. PCM or ECM faulty
  3. Fuel injector(s) faulty
  4. Ignition system - Ignition module, coil, spark plugs and wires
  5. Fuel system

Car keeps giving p0303 code.

Code P0303 means that there is a misfire detected on cylinder #3. This could becaused by anything from a worn out spark plug to a blown cylinder head gasket, a faulty fuel injector, a bad ignition coil, or a leaking intake manifold gasket. I have also seen this type of code caused by clogged-up EGR ports in the intake manifold on certain engines. "Freeze Frame Data" stored in your Engine computer along with the fault code is designed to help identify what engine conditions (high speed/slow speed, heavy load/light load, etc.) are producing the misfire. This helps a lot in identifying exactly what is causing the cylinder to misfire.

One way to eliminate some of the possible causes is to swap parts with another cylinder to see if the code changes.

If you have "Coil-On-Plug" ignition, you can swap the coil on #3 cylinder with the coil on #4 Cylinder and swap the #3 spark plug with the #2 spark plug. Then clear the codes and drive the car till the Check Engine (or Service Engine Soon) light comes back on.

If it still gives you P0303, then it is not being caused by the plug or the coil. It could be any of the other possible causes listed above.
If it now gives you P304, replace the bad ignition coil that is now on #4 cylinder.
If it now gives you P302, Then replacement of all the spark plugs is recommended.
