Before you listen to friends about the head gasket have a compression test done to confirm the fact run fault codes again and fix all the systems revealed . Check for vacuum leaks from hoses to the vents and brakes.

Missfire in cylinder 1 3 5

Never seen a 318 with a six cylinder before - they only came in 4 in the 1800cc to the best of my knowledge. Anyway, your problem is classic and it is the coyle pack. It is all one unit with two separate windings - 1st winding 1, 3, and 5 and 2nd winding 2, 4 and 6. Are you sure that the engine is not a 2.5 stright 6? When you take off the coyle pack, check the part number on the web. Good Luck!!

Car is producing a lot of smoke from exhaust when engine on and stuttering when driving - have been told it is one of the coils that has failed but the smoke is worryijng

If a coil failed, that would explain the stuttering when driving, but the smoke is due to a leak inside the engine, either antifreeze getting into the cylinders or the oil is passing the rings or oil is leaking into a cylinder from a valve.

If there is a Service Engine Soon light there are likely codes that are stored. So, have it scanned to give you a clue as to which cylinder is missing.

do a compression test of the cylinders, could be a burnt valve, from what you describe engine is missfiring on idle and running on all cylinders at higher revs
