Where is the ignition switch in an 1989 chevy S-10

Remove lower dash panel, under steering wheel, there will be a bracket that holds steering wheel, remove both 15mm nut's that point up, not the 13mm bolt's the screw into the colum , steering wheel will come down enough where you will see the ignition switch on the top side of the colum, the switch will be screw to the colum with the head light dimer switch.

Wiring problem from the fuel pump relay on the firewall of my 1989 3/4 ton 4x4 gmc pickup - to the ignition switch - could it be an open circuit or the ignition switch itself?

The ignition switch could be the culprit. It's located on the lower half of the column, on top of it. Remove the plug, the two screws that hold it on, and lift it off the actuator rod that runs up to the key cylinder. It's about $30.00 new and takes about 10 minutes.

Or you could bypass the problem.

Took baterry out to charge

The mechanic should check the ignition switch of the car . prepare the equipment to be used then check the ignition switch, check the wires that are connected to the ignition switch that connect to the battery. you also have to check the fuse if the ignition switch is worn out or destroyed then repair or replace. The wires if there are worn out or destroyed wires and fuses then replace , if loose wire connection then reconnect them. But to figure it out the problem is only in the ignition switch and its wires or wire connections. You just have to repair and reconnect the wires and repair the ignition switch.
