  1. Find the mounting points. In most cases, you will have to remove part of the interior boot trim of the vehicle, the floor covering and some time the side panels. In some but not all cases, you will also need to remove the vehicle's bumper, sometimes you have to drop the vehicles exhaust tail pipe and remove the heat shield.
  2. Bolt the tow bar straight into 2 holes on each side of the vehicle's chassis legs. In some cases, there may be supporting arms that secure further forward on the chassis or up to the back panel. Some towbars mount directly to the bumper in place of the standard bumper beam and then slide into the chassis legs. In some cases, a bumper cut may be required before refitting it to the vehicle.
  • All vehicles registered after Sept. 1998 have to have manufacturers tow bar mounting points built into the chassis. This often makes the tow bar fitting easier in terms of bolting it to these mounting points.
  • Vehicle electrics are normally accessed behind one of the rear light clusters and scotch locked into the loom feeds but with newer vehicles fitted with multiplex or Canbus systems a vehicle specific plug-in electrical kit may be required.
  • Tools
  • You will need a good range of tools to carry out a successful tow bar installation.
  • 10mm socket and spanner
  • 13mm socket and spanner
  • 17mm socket and spanner
  • 19mm socket and spanner
  • 24mm socket and spanner
  • Phillips and flat screw drivers
  • Torque bits and driver (mainly for bumper fixings)
  • 12 volt light tester
  • Junior hacksaw (bumper cuts)
  • Pliers
  • Side cutters
  • Insulation tape
  • Torch
  • You may not need all of the above but this would be a good working tool kit to carry almost any tow bar fitting
And yes Flat towing will cause your tires to wear out evenly (an advantage over tow dollies) but more quickly (a disadvantage to flatbed towing). As with two-wheel towing, it's a good idea to disconnect or remove the drive shafts when you're flat towing. Because flat towing is so popular among RVers who frequently unhitch their towed cars for use during trips, some companies manufacture aftermarket drive shaft couplings that can easily connect or disconnect the drive shafts of the towed car with the pull of a lever.
Some people choose to opt out of this extra cost and instead flat tow their cars with the transmission in neutral. While this method is rough on cars (and requires you travel with your car keys in the ignition), manual transmissions work best in this situation. They produce less resistance (and thus, less friction) than an automatic transmission. If you have a car with an automatic transmission, you can still flat tow in neutral; it's just a better idea to invest in an aftermarket component that lubricates your transmission during long trips to prevent wear and tear. Either way, when towing with a car in neutral with the drive shaft still connected, plan on your car's engine wearing out much more quickly than if you take the time to disconnect the shafts.

Regardless of which method of towing is best for you, be sure to practice towing before hitting the open road and contact your insurance agent to make sure you're properly covered.

unfortunately with the regulations as they are you will have to have the tow bar fitted at an accredited towbar shop as you will need a modification plate fixed to the vehicle fire wall by the registered installer. If you have a machinery inspection and there is no mod plate then you will be put off the road

How do you get a 2002 pt cruiser into neutral without a key its an automatic

Without disconnecting the linkage you don't. You would have to disconnect the linkage and put it in neutral manually. If your trying to tow the vehicle it is better to put the front wheels on a dolly or lift from the front. Towing a front wheel drive with the wheels on the pavement is not usually a good thing as it tends to damage the transmission. If you have no choice but to tow it with all 4 wheels on the ground you will have to disconnect the linkage and put it in Neutral manually or use the key to unlock the steering and shifter assembly and tie the steering. If your worried about battery drain with the ignition in the on position disconnect the negative battery terminal.

We would like to know if we can tow this car behind our motorhome with tow bar by just puting the trans in neutral.

dont tow car long distance in neutral. it burns up the transmission. if its rear wheel drive just disconnect the drive shaft. if front wheel drive you need to have the front wheels lifted while towing long distance

Can you put a towbar in front of the mustang

If it is automatic then would suggest no doing this. When towing with rear wheels trailing the driveshaft is still turning the tailshaft of transmission,< rear wheel drive > and without motor running the transmission doesn't circulate fluid to cool it off. if it is the only way to move it for you without a trailor then it's best to remove driveshaft and use a car dolly to tow. If it is standard then driveshaft is not does'nt have to be removed. Either way a dolly is what you need to tow it, < towbar won't work > and old school chain or strap can damage fron bumper shell.

How to tow a 2003 5.7 liter dodge durango

i am glad you asked
thats i the problem with the electronic select FWD system
when towing a FWD you should put both selectors in neutral this frees the transfer case and the drive shafts
how ever with the electronic system i dont know if it stays in neutral when the car is disconnected from the battery.
so you can make some tryles
  1. put the car in neutral in both selectors "gear and FWD" while the car is running when all the warning bell and stuff have gone off turn off the car
  2. now see if the car can be pushed or towed while the battery is connected
  3. now disconnect the battery and follow step 2
  4. if this works then all is well
i know when towing a FWD car u do need to put the transfer case in neutral to prevent damage
if you have the owners manual check under towing
if you don't, contact your local dealer and see what they say
hope this helps
