Rotate the T/C slowly as you apply light pressure to the center of the T/C until you feel it lock into the front pump, usually 2 seperate bumps felt, also if the trans has fluid after it locks into the pump fluid will come out the cooling line fittings when you rotate the converter. BE SURE that the converter is fully seated into the pump before installation or pump damage is possible

You'll need a transmisssion jack. The biigest concern is when installing the new transmission, make sure the torque converter is positioned so the front pump is still engaged before you start tightening any bolts. If the transmission will not contact the engine completely then the torque converter has come out of the front pump. Lower the transmission and turn the torque converter slowly until you feel the spot where the pump engages and you can push the torque converter into the transmission. Realicn the transmission with the jack and start installing the mount bolts. When that is done then install the bolts that fasten the converter to the flywheel. Reconnect the wire harness and fill the trans.

The valve body maybe different
& the torque converter for sure
if a different motor

Front pump seal and bushing went out and wore my torque converter down can i just replace the seal and bushing?


since tranny out to repair pump seal and bushing have it pressure checked and flushed and install new torque converter at transmission bench build facility.

1993 A4LD oil leak


My 93' Stang has the same problem. Well you got a few things there, most likely the front pump seal. That seal connects your torque converter to the trans and allows fluid to flow through it if that gets worn it may leak, but it will usally do this if the engine is running or when it gets put under a heavier load (ie: Driving up a hill) it may still leak if the engine has just been shut off. could also be torque converter or flexplate im still working on that soloution.

How Do I Change a Transmissions Front Oil Seal on a 1978 Chrysler New Yorker with a 360 Engine and an 727 Transmission...


This involves removing the transmission as a unit, remove the lower access cover
on the bell housing and unbolt flywheel from engine. You will have to rotate the
engine manually with a socket and breaker bar. Drop the drive shaft from the
rear axle and slide it out. Unhook coolant lines from transmission and linkage
Support transmission with a transmission jack and make sure you have enough
clearance to lower it, unbolt bell housing. wiggle transmission slightly to
break seal between bell housing and engine, move the jack and tranny back about
an inch or two to disengage the pilot and pins, lower tranny onto jack .
bring it out into a good clean area and slide out the torque converter.
the seal can be pulled out with a seal puller, install new one with a seal driver
and reinstall torque converter carefully making sure it engages correctly and
does not sit proud of the bell housing. Reverse procedure. Make sure to use emergency
brake and chocking, these tranny's are dangerously heavy so be sure to use a jack.

When changing a pump rotor, tourque converter, gasket and filter on the transmisson, would you have to take apart the transmission to get to any of them?


There is nothing called a pump rotor in this transmission pump.It has a gear type pump with and inner and outer gear.You would need to remove the pump from the front of transmission to perform this repair(suspicious that it would need pump gears and not have major internal transmission damage, never seen that in 25 years of rebuilding)but would not have to completely disassemble transmission.The filter can replaced by removing pan on bottom of transmission and the torque converter fits into the pump at the front of transmission.You would need to remove transmission from the car to install torque converter.Are you trying to fix a problem or understand a repair that has already been preformed?Let me know if I can help.Good Luck!

When I start to drive my ford explorer the over drive light O/D come on and start to flashing. How I can fix the problem?


he overdrive off light flashing indicates that a problem with your
transmission has been detected. Take it to the dealer or a transmission
shop and get it checked out. If you continue to drive the Explorer with
the O/D OFF light flashing you can possibly damage the transmission.


Ford has issued a TSB on this problem. Has to do with a transmission oil pump defect and repair procedure.

ISSUE:
Some vehicles may experience excessive torque converter slippage, torque converter not engaging, or Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 628 or P0714 stored in memory. This may be caused by damage to the fluid pump support seal and/or to the groove on the pump where the seal is located.
ACTION:
Inspect the fluid pump seal for damage. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE:
1. Follow normal diagnostic procedures as listed in the appropriate Service Manual.
2. Inspect the fluid pump support for damage. If damaged, also inspect the fluid pump support seal groove on the pump.
3. If the groove is damaged, replace the pump.
4. If the groove is not damaged, replace the fluid pump support seal with a redesigned Seal (F77Z-7L323-AA). Refer to Figure 1.
5. Do not replace the torque converter unless it is damaged or fails the criteria listed in the appropriate Service Manual and/or refer to TSB 96-26-12.

The torque converter to flex plate torque spec's are as
follow's.(listed by transmission)
A4LD
20-34 ft lbs (27-46 N.m)
AOD/C-6/E40D
20-30 ft lbs (27-41 N.m)

1989 ford ranger automatic transmission


Your truck has a A4LD transmission. The older ones had major problems. What i believe is happening with yours is the converter is locking up intermittently. 1st-4th are actual gears for 5th(overdrive) the converter locks. I had the same problem as well as did alot of people I spoke with. I solved it by getting a used A4LD out of a '92 ranger with a 3.0L motor (these transmissions had some upgrades to deal with a number of problems including the one you are talking about.) You will need to swap bell-housings (this requires the pump to be shimmed properly,I paid a shop $100 to install the pump ,with is attached to the back of the bell-housing) There are only 2 kinds of A4LD one for floor shift and 1 for column shift,make sure you get the right one.Good luck.
