Question about 2004 Ford F150

1 Answer

I have a 2004 F-150 5.4 and I need to know if the flywheel is messed up or if it's something else. It's making a loud scraping/grinding noise around the flywheel, more so when I accelerate.

Take off Trans Dust cover and inspect, See if there is any damage to the Trans dust cover? See if starter has to be shimmed? See if the starter is sticking in the fly wheel, which will grind like crazy, if it does stick.?

I turn the key and it makes a loud scraping/grinding noise and dosnt crank or start vr commmodore v6 auto

Starter bolts are loose, or starter components may need servicing; probably bendix drive plunger / starter solenoid stuck, out of alignment or damaged.

Check the starter first, then flywheel, and while u are under there, inspect the crankshaft and drivetrain for signs of damage or otherwise
And most importantly--work safe

I replaced my starter on my 94 ford ranger. my truck won't start, when it cranks, it makes a loud grinding noise. How can I fix this problem?

When buying starter motors it is essential that the starter pinion teeth are of the same pitch as the flywheel ring gear. Not all starters from the same make fit different engines because of this problem. However I would be checking that I had put the starter in the housing properly as any misalignment will cause your problem

Car makes loud noise starting

sounds like your starter needs shimmed and/or replaced or you have a flat spot on your flywheel. the sound your hearing is from the starter motor gears not properly aligning with the flywheel gears and quite literally grinding material off of one or the other. if you continue to force it your flywheel will need replaced if not already

The cars making a grinding noice when i turn the wheel to the right, its a loud scraping the brakes seem to be alright, can havin a blown shock have something to do with that? If so how hard is it to change...

you could have bad cv joints. does it make a popping or crunching noise as well? I would also take a closer look at the inner pads as well the inners wear out quicker.

FLYWHEEL MAKES RUBBING NOISE WHEN WARM AND ACCELERATING

You have a grinding noise when it's running or when you try to start it?
There is an inspection cover just behind the oil pan of the engine. If you remove it you can see the teeth on the flywheel. Chances are that the flywheel may still be good and the starter drive (part of starter) may be failing. If so and you leave it that way it will damage the flywheel. On automatic cars it's called a flex plate. And yes if you have a chrysler trans on there the converter may have the ring gear welded on.

Put new starter in 96 nisson a week ago now its real hard starting (grinding, not catching) i can get it to start but something wrong does it need to be shimed thank you

If it is making the noise I think it is, the problem is with the flywheel. The teeth on the flywheel wear out and when the starter goes to engage, it doesn't quite fully engage into the flywheel teeth and a makes a loud, sharp grinding noise, like you tried to start a running engine. What you can do is remove the starter and look inside at the flywheel. Make a mark, paint dot or crayon, and turn the flywheel with a screwdriver. If there are damaged teeth, and I suspect there are, they will be very evident. If that is the case, you will need to replace the starter (new starter will likely be damaged from your efforts to start your vehicle) and flywheel.

When i try to start the car it makes a funny sound and wont start it sounds like something is not catching

Good indication of a bad starter. Is it just clicking or is it a grinding ugly noise?. The second is definately the starter.

you may need to have your clutch cable adjusted ... it is most likely not releasing the clutch fully and grinding against the flywheel

Scraping noise when off gas and clutch is out

either the throw out bearing has failed ot the clutch plate hub has failed
possibly from the clutch plate being installed incorrectly and the hub springs are hitting on the flywheel bolts

There may also be a loose bolt head scraping on your flex plate if you have an automatic transmission.
