How high is what you are calling high. There are many factors involved. Could be something as simple as low tire pressure. To a fuel leak. Do you have a check engine light on?
check for fuel leak at the pump. pull and fit new tips to the injectors. Have the injection timing checked by an accredited diesel shop ( same one that is replacing the injector tips)
get a tuneup.
or scan it for loose of closed loop operation, (USA CARS)
at idle
at flat ground cruise, right foot steady.
if CLose loop fails we fix that first. ask.
High on mileage means that the engine has done a lot of work, possible that the compression is down, need to check if this is below level, if there is oil used in excess then the engine needs an overhauling subject to the cost estimated.
Cant compromise on bad fuel as this will bring down the power of the engine.
High fuleconsumption means poor setting so fuel and ignition , check fuel settings- pump calibration and timing.
There are a few websites that have the official fuel consumption information for a new vehicle. Just google "1998 toyota spacio specs" and you can look it up.
The consumption you will achieve on one of these cars (now 12 years old with lots of miles driven) depends upon: 1. how they are driven; and 2. how they are mechanically maintained; and 3. running sufficiently high tyre pressures to minimise rolling resistance; and 4. the octane rating of fuel used and whether or not it is an ethanol blended fuel.(You will need to consume more fuel for the same distance traveled if using an ethanol blended versus a straight non-ethanol fuel).
A poorly maintained vehicle will usually give poor fuel economy as will one that is driven hard.
The spark plug number from Toyota Parts is 9091901059, which crosses to BPR5ES-11 for the standard plug from NGK. If you are having problems with the plugs burning out to quickly, I would have to ask if this HiAce is a dual fuel model? Maybe they removed the LP system before you bought it, and that's causing the problems your experiencing? Also the HiAce is an 80's minivan not an '02 Camry.
