Removal of inside door panel on camry 1997, disconnecting door handle from door panel

Remove the door panel, to get access to the handle,
from inside the door

door panel must come off.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Trim Panel(s), Door
Front
Removal

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301) if equipped with power locks or power windows.
   

1. CAUTION: Use care when removing the front door inside handle escutcheon (22620). Failure to do so can result in damage to the component.
   Carefully pry off the front door inside handle escutcheon by inserting a standard 1/4 inch screwdriver between the top rear portion of the front door inside handle escutcheon and the front door trim panel (23942).
   
   
   
   
   

1. If equipped with manual windows, slip a clean shop rag between the window regulator handle (23342) and the front door trim panel.
   

1. Pull the shop rag back and forth to release the window regulator handle clip.
   
   
   
   
   

1. Remove the three cover caps and front door trim panel screws.
   

1. Remove the one front door trim panel capped screw from the door pull handle.
   

1. If equipped with power windows, remove the door pull handle. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
   

1. Slide a flat-bladed tool behind each of the retainers and twist the tool to disengage the front door trim panel from the front door (20124).
   

1. Remove the front door trim panel.
   

Installation
To install, reverse the removal procedure. Body Side
Removal

1. Gently pry loose the body side door latch handle bezel and remove it.
   

1. Slide a suitable tool behind each of the retainers and twist the tool to disengage the body side door trim panel from the body side door (24622).

Refer to Section 01-11 for Power Window, Section 01-09 for Power Mirror, or Section 01-14B for Power Locks. Watershield
Removal

1. Remove the Front Door Trim Panel . Refer to the removal procedure in this section.
   

1. Remove the front door watershield by carefully detaching it from the adhesive.
   

Installation

1. Install the front door watershield in the proper position and press firmly at the adhesive areas. If necessary, use additional adhesive to ensure an adequate seal.
   

1. Install the Front Door Trim Panel . Refer to the installation procedure in this section.
   

On the inside trim, you can remove screws (these screws may be covered by filler pieces or may be visible, or they may require you pry a plastic piece off that covers the screws) that are by the door handle, arm rest, under door and side of door and then gently pull back on the panel as there will also be retaining clips attached and you don't want to break them. You'll need to lift the door panel upwards in order to get it off the window ledge. Then you'll need to manipulate the panel and disconnect the door handle linkage from the door handle and disconnect the wiring for your controls. Then you can replace the handle

On the inside trim, you can remove screws that are by the door handle, arm rest, under door and side of door and then gently pull back on the panel as there will also be retaining clips attached and you don't want to break them. You'll need to lift the door panel upwards in order to get it off the window ledge. Then you'll need to manipulate the panel and disconnect the door handle linkage from the door handle and disconnect the wiring for your controls. Then you can replace your door handle and reconnect it to the linkage and then reinstall the panel

On the inside trim, you can remove screws that are by the door handle, arm rest, under door and side of door and then gently pull back on the panel as there will also be retaining clips attached and you don't want to break them. You'll need to lift the door panel upwards in order to get it off the window ledge. Then you'll need to manipulate the panel and disconnect the door handle linkage from the door handle and disconnect the wiring for your controls. Then you can put the new handle in and reconnect everything

On the inside trim, you can remove screws that are by the door handle, arm rest, under door and side of door and then gently pull back on the panel as there will also be retaining clips attached and you don't want to break them. You'll need to lift the door panel upwards in order to get it off the window ledge. If it's the inside handle, just disconnect the rod to the back of the handle to replace it. If it's the outside handle, pull back the weather seal and you'll be able to remove the bolts holding down the outer door handle

You'll need to lift the door panel upwards in order to get it off the window ledge. Then you'll need to manipulate the panel and disconnect the door handle linkage from the door handle and disconnect the wiring for your controls

if you hit the lock button a couple times, will it finally lock?

If so, then you will need to take door cover off and lube up the connectors as they probably got corroded.

Two 10mm bolts, or nuts, hold the handle on from inside the door. dont forget to remove actuating rod from old handle. probably clip is broke also.

The radio speakers are mounted in the RH front door (20124) and LH front door (20125), as well as behind the quarter trim panels (31012) in the rear of the vehicle. The Ford Super Sound Audio System has the addition of a subwoofer mounted in the RH quarter trim panel.

1. Remove the front door trim panel (23942). Refer to Section 01-05 .
