Need to feel it ,could be clutch ,if it goes in without the running then its the clutch. But i think your problem is more like the linkage and if its a builders van, then you could have rubble dropped down inside the gearchange boot.???Boxer isnt the gearchange on the dash on this model??if so then the problem could be the linkage cable ,--they get a bit rusty and sticky and you can only buy a complete pair as one unit .Try oiling with a proper oil can and some engine oil ,and not that obnoxous fish oil wd stuff

My Audi A3 2.0 fsi sline Quattro is struggling to find gears ( very stiff to change and impossible to find reverse with the engine running)

First check the fluid level and make sure it is correct. If it's good you will then need to go to the dealership to have the codes pulled. I hope the problem is the fluid because it will be expensive otherwise.

1998 GMC Safari only going into 1st gear

The transmission is probably staying in 2nd gear (limp mode) indicating an electronic issue. Your van will have a 4L60-E transmission

My Ford Escort van W reg. which I have just purc hased has problems with stiff gears particularly into reverse.

One of the most common causes of hard shift is the clutch no fully disengaging, also do you put it in 2nd before you try 1st or reverse, it helps stop gear motion in the trans which eases the effort to engage the non-synchro gears, which first and reverse are most likely.
