I too am attempting to find the unknown non existent trip switch to disable alarm.
what is currently working for me is ... before i shut off car, have everyone exit, engage power locks to lock ALL, then manually unlock your own door, turn off engine, open door, then manually lock your door.
by NOT using the power locks or keyless entry system unlock/lock, my method hasn't yet set nor triggered the alarm. (i still keep the remote handy though until i can get a spare).

There is no way to do that being that the factory alarm is controled by the BCM (body control module) your only option is to go to the dealer and buy two new remotes and have them set to the frequency of your vehicle.

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee alarm will set on its own when closing the door even if I do not set the alarm with the remote. Is this normal?

Are you using the power door locks after the car is turned off?
This too (I find) will engage the alarm, automatically.

in my opinion, the jeep factory supplied alarm system is not "normal"
i am still trying to figure out how to permanently disengage

Alarm

Mine has done this and i as well do not have a working remote. To disengage it just put the key in the driver door lock and turn for 2-3 seconds and it will disengage. i didn't even know mine had an alarm until coming out of work one night and it went off and i could not get it to turn off unless i went to "unlock" the door and hold it there for a few seconds.

98 Jeep Wrangler with Alarm Problem - Installed by Marietta Jeep

Your vehicle has 2 ignition wires that you can put back to factory, and start the vehicle.
The wires you are looking to put back together are (blue) and (black/orange) - and found under the D/S dash. (ignition harness) They will be larger in Diameter than the others.
They were cut to install the security system. They go into the "brain" and out the other side. A relay inside the BRAIN is most likely failing.
If you no longer want the alarm installed, simply match up all of the factory colors. Use crimp-on ****-connectors for secure connection.
Let me know if you need more help.

first remove the bottom acess panel in glovebox, [3 screws] pull it out. then the far right black oversize fuse closest to you pull out. that is fuse and buzzer for factory alarm.. leave the fuse out and put panel back in. that should disengage the alarm...

Jeep one year old. Keyless just stopped working. Engine starts for a second then cuts off. Replaced battery in key/remote and still doesn't work. Now alarm sounds if opened with the key the old...

Assuming you have a second key try using that one to deactivate the alarm, if not replace battery in remote. Does lock and unlock work now? you will need to get the remote operational to disengage the security feature that will not allow car to start.
if not disconnect the car battery let sit for 15 min to reset system try again..make sure bettery in remote is installed properly.

There are switches on the door lock cylinders that are supposed to shut the alarm off when you use the key,but they go bad allot. you could try unlocking the passenger door first, since that one usually gets less use and is less likely to go bad. Otherwise you can disconnect the alarm module, it is located behind the glove box.
