Sounds like the same problem I have. Check your dashboard to see if autotheft light remains after you turn the car off.

Hi toolman,

Does it just free spin or grind against the flywheel?

Has there been recent trouble with the starter?

Here's the thing.....
Chevy starters don't start spinning until the solenoid is fully extended, the starter gear and the flywheel should be spinning on the same plane at that point.

Possible problems

  • Some teeth on the flywheel are missing/broken
  • All teeth on the starter are missing broken
  • Starter bolts are loose
Comment back with as much detail as possible

    Hi

Chevy starter solenoids are electromagnetic piston operated high amperage relay switches engineered to do two things

    1. When energized, the solenoid creates a magnetic field causing a small piston within that field to move. Attached to the piston is the bendix or starter gear which is driven forward to mesh with the flywheel

    2. There is also a copper plated disk on the piston. When fully extended, this connects +12VDC from your battery to the starter, not before.
So if the starter was spinning, the gear HAD to be fully extended.

It is time to pull the starter

Remove the starter shields and check the starter drive. Does it fly out when the starter is engaged? Check the flywheel for ring gear damage from the starter. Check the flywheel for breakage at the crankshaft, try to turn the engine using the flywheel with a screw driver.

I have a 2000 toyota celica gts and it wont start or turn over the starter will make like a whinning sound but its not trying to crank the engine maybe its the starter but just in case its not anybody have...

Likely either the starter or solenoid. Solenoid is a combination of relay and actuator, pushing the starter's gear into engagement with your flywheel.

We are building a 454, every time we finally get the engine to turn over the brand new starter breaks, we have been through 3 new starters now. What could be wrong?

Turn the engine by hand from the front main pulley. Something is binding in the engine, maybe you will hear it.

Engine wont turn over on my gv 2006

The 1st thing i need to do is clarify what you mean by "won't trun over" do you mean the starter motor spins the engine and it will not fire up or that the starter doesn't trun the engine over? If the starter doesn't turn the engine over do you hear a clicking coming from the starter solenoid when this happens? If so replace the starter solenoid the heavy electrical contacts are burned.

Starter motors good but wont turn over my1982 lincoln continental

When you say the starter motor runs, do you mean it runs fast but does not turn the engine, in that case it may be something to do with starter not engaging the ring gear.

If when the starter runs it turns the engine slowly then it could be starter is not getting enough power.

The reasons for starter motor not getting enough power can be, a bad battery, loose battery connector, stiff engine or a bad starter solenoid.
To check a bad battery, turn your head lights on and when you try to crank the engine, if the light go dim, you have a bad battery or a bad battery connection. If the lights are not affected you may have a stiff engine.

Starter won't turn over engine

I know it sounds dumb, but by turning over, you mean that the engine turns but does not start? Or, that the starter turns but the engine does not turn (spin with the starter engaged and running). If engine turns with starter, check spark & fuel. If starter turns and engine does not, check the teeth on the flywheel. if any are missing or worn off, it will give that problem. If starter engages but engine seems to be "locked up", remove spark plugs and attempt to turn it by hand. Any coolant on plugs indicates a blown head gasket or cracked cylinder head. If engine does not turn by hand with plugs out, likely you have a bearing or other "lower end" problem.

Engine won.t turn

hi can you turn engine over by hand [engine s not sezied ] and how did you test the battery and how did you test starter because if the engines not seized and you put a jump lead from your positive terminal off a good battery to a starters main terminal and it wont, turn over the starters faulty or there is no engine earth so connect the other jump lead from the negative battery teminal to the engine block and try again it will turn over if the starters good if the starter turns over with the jump leads check the small terminal on the starters wire is live when someone turns the ignition key if it is and the starter does not turn over then the soleniod on the starter is faulty if no live at small terminal then the ignition switch or starter relay are faulty best of luck yates2104546
