2003 Kia Spectra odd rattle in shifter

On our 2003 Kia Spectra, when you push the brake pedal in you can hear some kind of rattle beneath the shift lever. It sounds like loose gravel rattling around in there. Car seems to run, shift & brake OK.

You are most likely hearing metal on metal on the brake pads. The brakes are not attached to the gear shift in any way. Unless those Koreans have done some really wierd design.

2003 kia. spectra 1.8 will not shift out of park. The actuator. in the console is working when I hit the brake. The button pushes in but the shifted will not release out of park.

If you are sure the release actuator is working (or are you just hearing it?) when you step on the brake pedal it maybe just stuck against the weight of the car. Is it parked on a hill, or against a curb?

Could it be that you are hearing it click and it works electricaly but is broken mechanicaly

2003 kia spectra starts won't shift out of park

On many newer cars there is a locking mechanism that prevents the shifter from being taken out of the PARK position if the brake is not depressed. This may be the problem. On vehicles that have this there is usually an override mechanism (usually some recessed button on the shift console) that can be pressed to release the shifter. It should be mentioned in the users manual. The image below shows the locking mechanism (16). I have read that there is a small cap on the shifter body you can remove and under it is a button you press to release the shifter. This will work until you can affect repairs.

My 2001 Kia Spectra, automatic transmission, has the shifter stuck in park. Kris Forster

if your vehicle required brake application prior to shifting out of park your problem exists in the switch at the brake pedal, the solenoid that unlocks the shifter control a fuse or the wiring between them.

I am unable to get my 2001 spectre into gear. I

If it has a center console inside the center console is a shift interlock solenoid which when the brake pedal is depressed sends a voltage signal to the shift interlock solenoid which then unlocks the shifter allowing you to shift it. It may be bad look into it. You can also manually unlock the shifter by pulling the small plug on the console next to the shifter then sticking a screwdriver down in there far enough to un lock the shifter they made that for this reason.
