Spray some dry graphite in the ignition to loosen up the tumblers and also try moving the steering-wheel a little when trying to turn it.

You will need a new ignition lock cylinder. You may be able to get it to work by taking off the plastic trim and tapping with a mallet while turning the key.

Ignition key will not turn in my 2006 durango

You might have a worn out key and/or ignition lock cylinder. OR, you might have the steering column locked. Try turning the wheel hard to the left while turning the key, and then turning the wheel hard to the right and turn the key. Best of luck!

Key lock ignition won't turn. Does it have to do anything with the programming? or just mechanical failure? This is for a 2005 Dodge Durango. key ignition cylnder is stuck and won't turn.

Programming won't effect if it turns or not.

The most common problem is when there is feedback pressure from the tire against a curb, up hill, etc., and that causes the steering lock to bind the key cylinder. The solution for that is to try pushing both ways on the steering wheel, as you try to turn the key, to relieve the pressure.

The second most common is wear on the key, so it helps to jiggle the key side to side, up and down, etc. as you try to turn it.

Try turning the key upside down, using the spare, etc.

As an act of desperation, you could try putting the key in, and gently tapping on it with a piece of wood or the handle of a hammer. They are beginning to make ignition locks with tumblers spring operated, at right angles to the key, and they are very easily bound up by friction, because the springs are so small and weak. This was a very common problem with the Ford Focus, and I believe Dodge picked up the same bad design.

2002 dodge intrepid steering wheel locked key wont turn

well sounds like you have a lot of keys on your ring
if this is the case insert key now look under the columb see the hole under the ignition insert a screw driver in there a square screw driver with the key in the ignition tap the end of the screw driver up toward the ignition every once and a while try turning the key once you can turn the key press the screw driver into the hole as you turn it will go in further at this point pull the whole ignition out with the key
now you have an ignition in your hands take it to the local lock smith tell him the problem and have him gently file the slides inside the ignition they will usualy charge you 20-30 bucks or go to the dealer and buy a new ignition my last ignition for my pt cost me almost 200 bucks and when i got home i fixed my old one was i pissed off when i found out how easy it was

Durango steering column can I fix

Try turning the wheel slightly and turning the key, this will relieve pressure off the steering lock mechanism. If that doesn't work, try tapping the key. That is a common problem on 99-05 Caravans

My 2006 dodge durango won't start. The ignition is locked

Start with wiggling the key and steering wheel. If that doesn't help try pushing up/forward on your shifter to ensure park is fully engaged

2001 dodge durango ignition switch is stuck in locked position

Your tumblers are worn. You can "Bump" the lock to get it to work, but this is a very temporary fix. To bump the lock, simply tap on the end of the key with something heavy like a short 2X4 , the heal of a shoe or something similar - while in the ignition while attempting to turn the key to the start position. DO NOT turn the engine back of until you get the car home or to a repair facility.

Ignition won't turn to drive

if tapping it doesnt work. hit it hard for a few minutes then try to turn it forward and back both then repeat.  I had a tow truck come to tow me and he started banging on mine.  I said i already did that while waiting for you and he said you will see.  he kept doing it and a few minutes later i looked like a ********.  He told me the pins were sticking and a lock smith could take the first 2 pins out for me.
