Question about 2003 Chevrolet Malibu

1 Answer

I bout a 2004 Mailbu Maxx LT and when I went to use the remote start the first time it worked I tried it a few minutes later and it would not work. After about a halp hour I tried again did not work. Then after a while I drove the car to a business shout it off and it worked from inside the car but would not work after I shut it off went shopping and tried it when I came back about 20 minutes later. Can you advise me what to look for or how to check out what might be the problem. The car has a new battery and the remotes batteries have been replaced. Maybe something Loose somewhere Ron

As above I stated I tried in and the first time it worked. This means I read the manual which states press t he lock key the light will flash immediately press the start symbol on the remote hold it for 4 seconds and it will start. So just pressing the stop symbol on the remote and holding down the st art symbol will work one time but the procedure will not work a second or third time. Please read my explanation closlely and tell me what has to be done other than the procedure explained.

You must press the LOCK button on the remote before starting the vehicle.
Even if the doors are locked already.
Check it out and get back if this is not the case - if the problem persists.

Is the unit factory, dealer installed, or aftermarket?

'04 was the first year Chevy used a factory installed remote starter.

Sometimes all that is required is to have the keyfobs re-programmed to the Module.

It may be generating a bad code-hopping sequence.

Also - take your vehicle to a local parts store and have the OBD codes read. Various codes will stop the starter from performing properly. Even if the lamp is not lit - as it could be burned out, removed, or be a code that will not trigger the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp).

Here is a short summary on how the factory starter works and some causes why it woulnd't start

The remote vehicle start (RVS) function allows engine starting while not in the vehicle. It also allows the vehicle HVAC system and other vehicle systems to enable, providing a comfortable vehicle upon entry. RVS functions have an operating range of up to 59m (195ft), depending on conditions. The RVS sequence begins by pressing and releasing the lock button and then pressing and holding the RVS buttons on the keyless entry transmitter. The turn signal lamps will illuminate to indicate the vehicle has received the remote start request. Each time an RVS is performed, the vehicle doors are locked; however, they may then be unlocked/locked with the transmitter or vehicle key at any time. Once activated, the engine is allowed to run for 10 minutes. The RVS time may be extended by an additional 10 minutes by again pressing and releasing the lock button and then pressing and holding the RVS buttons on the transmitter. This feature is called an RVS continue and allows a maximum of 20 minutes of engine running. If the RVS continue is performed at 7 minutes into the initial 10 minute time-out, a total of 17 minutes of engine running would occur. The RVS event may be suspended at any time by pressing only the RVS button on the transmitter or by entering the vehicle and turning ON the hazard lamps.

Reasons an RVS event will NOT Happen:

***The RVS System WILL NOT operate if any of the following conditions are present:

A current vehicle DTC (Diagnostic Test Code) that illuminates the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is set - obtain vehicle DTCs.

Keyless Entry Transmitter is not Operational.

The vehicle is in Valet Mode.

RVS is Disabled through Vehicle Personalization.

More than 2 Remote Starts have been attempted.

The HAZARD switch is in the ON position.

A current HAZARD switch DTC is set.

A current HOOD AJAR DTC is set.

    Rear compartment lid is ajar.

    Any Door is not locked.

The Content Theft Deterrent (CTD) system detects an alarm trigger.

Engine RPM greater than 0 Detected.

    Excessive Coolant TEMP is registered.

Accelerator pedal position greater than 0 percent.

    Vehicle is not in PARK.

A current Vehicle Theft Deterrent Malfunction DTC.

A current Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System DTC is set.

A vehicle speed sensor signal is detected by the ECM.

    Vehicle power mode is incorrect.

So as you can see - there are MANY things that could be making this happen. Your best course of action is to check the easy things, then take it to the dealer and tell them what you have already checked.

Hatch won't open on 2004 Malibu Maxx

Try pushing the trunk release and turning the key in the lock at the same time.
It sounds like the electric lock has not released for what ever reason.
You should hear the trunk release relay when you push the remote.

Keyless remote only works part of the time.

I had the same problem only a few months after I bought the car new in 2003. Dealer fixed it. Then 6 months later same deal. Finally I went to a 3rd party and ordered new different brand remotes and figured out the programming which was quite simple. A serirs of procedures with the door and the key which programmed the devices. 5 years later no problems. Of course before you do anything try replacing the battery in the remote.

Factory remote start on 2004 Malibu Maxx stopped working

Fixed!!! I had several problems with my wife's remote start/lock/unlock/trunk/ panic. First it stopped working, i replaced the battery to find out that the battery holder inside the remote had broken solder at two points. Went to Harbor Freight bought a solder gun for $5 and solder wire for about $2. Once home i soldered the points back together (first time i've ever soldered anything). Put the new battery in and it didn't work. I pulled the whole thing apart and took the circuit board and touched the contacts where the button would have pushed at with a piece of metal. They locked and unlocked the car. So i knew at that point that the rubber thing was jacked. i got some tin foil and 5minute epoxy. Then i clued little tiny squares on the little black Nipples where they would contact the circuit board. Waited 6 minutes and put back together. Found out that if you start the car twice with out puting the key in the ignition you can't use the remote start. After putting the key in the ignition and starting it you reset the system and can remote start again. Dealer wanted 114 for the key remote and 54 to reprogram the remote to the car. I fixed my factory remote for under $20. Hope this helps someone
