You need to have the transmission serviced. You have a blown seal.

Check the cooling lines and also the rear seal, also see if the leak is coming from the oil pan gasket.

There is a mini-cooler inside the radiator tank that has ATF in it. The cooler lines between the trans and the radiator have ATF in them.
The smoke could have been ATF blowing onto the exhaust pipe.

What caused trans fluid to leak at rear of trans? what is the reccomendation for ATF fluid?

The rear seal is likely to blame, A relatively cheap fix if you know how to remove the drive shaft. as Far as trans fluid, Chrysler products unless competely flushed and torque converter is emptied and flushed as well, stick with ATF+3, or ATF+4. If you mix a dextron atf with atf+(3)(4), frothing will occur.

What i sthe first sign of the transmission going bad on our 1996 jeep cherokee?

if your trans is slipping when driving or if when you shift from park to reverse or drive it has a delay it doesn't necessarily mean the whole transmission is going. Could be something as simple as low or leaking fluid, a solenoid, a gasket...start with a trans service, if there is excessive metal in the pan, then your trans gears are going and you will need an overhaul or reman trans. Reman is cheaper and has a better warranty than an overhaul--faster too.

1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport, 4 cyl, check engine returns obdi error code 72. Is this the catalytic converter? Car runs great, no other problems.

The code refers to the catalytic converter efficiency. It can be a plugged converter. leaking exhaust, vacuum leak, fuel pressure problem, or even low compression. You really need to have the ECU read with a scanner that will give you the POXXXX code instead of the 2 digit code. This will help diagnosis the problem much better.

THE MOST COMMON LEAKS ARE THE TRANS FLUID PAN GASKET, THE NEXT IS THE TORQUE CONVERTER FRONT SHAFT SEAL.

Replace muffler, not the catalytic converter which started to rattle. Stop running, will crank but will not start. can it be the catalytic converter.

if the converter is rattlin then it needs to be replaced because the element inside is broken. if the jeep still does not run try removing the catalytic converter to see if the restriction is too much. should start if the converter is restricted. if it doesnt maybe its whatever caused the converter to go bad in the first place

Transmission leak where driveshaft enters trans, major gusher

You have a Seal out in the Tail of the Tranny. Where the Drive Shaft Yolk Enters there is a Seal that goes around it to Prevent this.
