I'm having the same problem but the noise stops when I'm driving along. When I stop at a red light it gets loud again until I accelarate.

Check the bolts to the flywheel they will rattle in idle if one or more are loose also the timing chain/belt if loose or worn, also check you idle pulleys. try to pin point the sound wile some one is in the car and have him rev the engine a bit .
hope you can find it

No, not the harmonic balancer ... that does nothing but offsets the crankshaft from being out of balance.
Sounds like a worn motor mount that is not completely broken. The engine is transferring vibration to the chassis through the worn motor mount.

Hope this helps.

No, the harmonic balancer never makes noise unless it is scraping on the plastic under it.

Think about it ... If the motor mount is worn, the balancer could be scraping the plastic splash shroud (maybe all the time). It is the motor mount that is worn/broken.

The balancer just spins and does nothing else. It was installed to balance the crank shaft when it was new.

Harmonic balancers do make noise when worn, they are made up of two peices of metal that are joined with rubber in order to dampen harmonics as well as ballance the engine.Anyways often a rattling sound at an idle and at early exceleration and then sound goes away as you speed up the engine a common problem with these engines, ford had a bad batch in the 1990's . So if your car has these symptoms just have your harmonic balancer replaced and no more rattle.

My 93 Mercury Topaz has had a loud rattling noise on the right side of the engine for over a year and has gotten louder with time. I man at a gas station told me he had the same noise with his Ford Tempo...

A mechanic would use a stethoscope to listen for the source of the noise.
If it is a loose balancer, you normally remove the motor mounts and support the engine from the bottom to gain access to the bolt.
It would be advisable to take the bolt out and use some locktite on the threads.

When car is put in gear and at idle i hear a loud knocking. When i accelerate it stops

The serpentine drive belt is worn or stretched causing the belt tensioner to rattle. Install a new belt and it will be gone. Good luck! Scott

I have a 92 tempo and when i drive it it makes a knocking sound on the front passenger side im not quite sure what it is im afraid that my car is gunna break down one of these days. can anyone tell me what...

Does it happen only when youre driving? Because I had the same car and mine had a rattle/knocking noise and it was the "Harmonic Balancer" (Crankshaft pulley) and those cars are known for it! It knocked really loud but if you pushed the throttle it would stop.

Rattling sound at idle speed

The rattling is a worn-out timing chain (rattling should be louder at one end of the engine). Get it changed now - they will eventually break, closely followed by your bank balance!

1993 tempo 2.3L...it makes a rattling noise at idle..went to a mechanic that fixed the harmonic wheel 1 1/2 years ago and he said it went out again, that the balancer on tempos always go out..is that...

pcv valve should do that: that stops the ventilation)(when you put your finger on it), so the car dies.<p>
the balancers don't always go out; but with a weak cranshaft they will. I'd let someone else check your engine you trust.

HARMONIC BALANCER

I have a '94 Tempo, it had a "ticking" sound. It was the "harmonic balancer" (crankshaft pulley) a local mechanic changed it for $60, the part cost me $120 (I work for a Ford dealership) $180 without employee discount. you can get one for much less at a junkyard if you can find one. Good luck, Sean
