Jeep burning a lot of oil

My 2002 Liberty is burning a lot of oil. On my last oil change (7/22/09) the guy put 5 qts in there and 9/1/09 I had to put 3 more qts. I can never go 3,000 before I change my oil. My Jeep runs out of oil before then.

There's a problem. and it needs to be attended to. . I will assume that this has a few miles on it. I hope anyway. Many things can cause this. If this is under 200,000 miles then it could be an intake gasket leaking and letting oil get sucked in through the valley. It could be a head gasket leaking / seeping oil into cylinders and burning it. Worn valve seals or piston rings can do the same. but usually in a very high milage motor ( unless this has not been maintained properly )
This is not easy to isolate or locate. since it is a minor leak over time. Most mechanics will advise you to replace or rebuild your motor. You could try a few things but without promise of solving the problem. sorry

Not a solution, sorry. But I run a Goodyear store in San Antonio Texas. Liberty's are problomatic. We have an 02 that doesnt leak oil, do seem to be smoking out of the tailpipe, hot or cold run. Initial morning start , no plumes of smoke. Yet the car magicaly consumes three courts of oil every 1 1/2 weeks. I know the solution is out there. If you've encountered this . . . . please call me at 210-533-3388

Jeep 2005 liberty. When I drive my jeep more than 30 miles lots of smoke and burning smell come out. The weird thing is that the oil meter is not indicating it is hot.

Sounds like you might have a blown valve cover gasket. That is were I recommend you to start checking. If that is good, check for a leak around the intake manifold.

Good Luck...

How much oil does my mercedes benz c class 2001 model need when doing an oil change

Not many cars go over the 5 qt. mark. Some big trucks do, and a lot of small cars stop at 4 qts. If you are not sure, put in the 5 qts, then check the oil. run it into the filter before checking. Hope this helps.

Just wanted to know if 03 jeep liberty sport is known for any kind of oil consumption. got mine checked this morning and i was 3 qts low! no leaks that we can see.

yes oil consumption is known between oil changes so keep an eye on checking it once a month, cuz a healthy and happy motor uses some oil! dont worry its normal in every vehicle.

2002 V6 Jeep Liberty-Oil Pump Replacement

Yes you have to check your pressure with a mechanical gauge first. If the pressure reading is good replace the oil pressure sending unit. They are known to go bad, and oil pumps going bad is rare.
