1998 jaguar xj8. the car will not start. the dash lights up and all i hear is a click when i turn the key. i thought it was the starter, and i replaced the starter. it still won't start. does anybody have any idea what kind of thing would stop the starter from turning over?

However, I can not find an inertia switch. I have a 1998 Jaguar XK8 convertible. Does being a convertible make a difference in this switch's location?
I removed the passenger kick panel and also checked in the fuse box door on the dash at the passenger side. Thank you.

I. make sure your battery is ok first.
2.using your key unlock and lock your drivers door a couple of times; then try starting the car.
3.if you have a spare key ' try using it to see if it start your car. if it start with spare key then your main key needs a new chip.

Security is set. Could be one problem. Fuel system can do this, but rarely. Takes a scanner to see where to look first.

do head lights come on? if not you'll need a boost or battery charger make sure it's also in park. try that if not that @ battery is charged turn headlights on turn key if lights dim @ it does'nt start most likely bad starter hope this helps you!!

If the starter is rapidly clicking when you turn the key, then it is insufficient battery current. You may enough power to power the lights, but not enough to keep the starter engaged. Try connecting a jumper. If a relay is clicking, you will need hands-on professional diagnosis

You need a new ignition switch.

starters is mounted on the bottom of engine. its a little long electric motor with a little drive gear that mesh to flywheel to turn engine over to crank.

2. Turn Ignition on.
3. Warning light on dash comes on.
4. When they go out, lift arm rest, inside their is a valley button, Press 5 times within 5 secs of lights on dash going out, Horn & Lights Flash.
5. Press any button on remote, remote programmed.
